“It’s all good. I think I feel better now. Maybe we can meet in London to shop and have a drink. I’d love that.”

“Sure. Always. I’ll introduce you to my wicked girlfriends. In fact, Jacinta’s having a party next week. She moved to Notting Hill. Why don’t you come along? Carson hates parties, so it would be great to have someone to gossip with.”

I laughed.

She hugged me, and another tear slid down my cheek.

“Thanks, Savvie, for allowing me in. It means everything.”

She smiled. “Why don’t we go out there and you flirt with your dishy Drake?”

“Kylie told me that Drake forced himself on her.”

Savvie’s head jerked back. “No. That’s impossible to believe. He’s a sweetie.”

“That’s what I thought, but they seem lost in a deep and meaningful.”

She led me out. “Don’t worry. She’s just trying to force herself on him more like it. Don’t believe everything you hear.”

We’d walked another step when she turned and took my hand and stared seriously into my face. “Now, you promise me that if you’re feeling that low again, you call me. Okay? Before doing that to yourself.”

I bit my lip and nodded with a shaky smile.

Drake stood at the bar, and his eyes followed me. Kylie wasn’t there, and the sting in my leg stopped more negative thoughts.

Chapter 14

Drake

“Iheardyou’renolonger at Salon Soir,” Carson said as we leaned against the bar, enjoying our free pints of stout.

“There’s something going on there. That Reynard Crisp’s pretty fucken rotten.”

“Huh.” He sniffed. “You’re not telling me anything new.”

Overhearing us, Declan asked, “Have you seen something?”

“He’s employed these Eastern European brothers. I’m not sure what they do, but they strike me as nasty.” I shouldn’t have said anything, but describing myself as bothered by what had happened during my last shift at Salon Soir was an understatement.

I could have died that night, and though I’d deposited that fifty-thousand-pound cheque towards my mother’s new home, I needed to unburden myself because there was danger happening close to the Lovechildes. I owed more to Declan and keeping his family safe than I did Crisp. That cheque was payment for saving his life. Nothing more.

I turned to Carson. “Can we talk somewhere?”

He followed me out, and we passed Kylie coming out of the bathroom. She winked at me, and I grit my teeth. I just wished she would find someone else to rub up against.

Carson laughed. “She’s still got the hots for you, I see.”

“It’s driving me nuts. I might have to report her.”

He frowned. “Why aren’t you going public with Manon?”

“That’s a long, shitty story. It all goes back to Crisp.” I sighed.

Just as we were about to walk outside, I turned to scan the dance floor where a DJ had set up. I caught Manon and Savanah going crazy there, their arms waving and hips swinging, giggling like they were having a ball.

“Your wife and Manon have become chummy, I see.”

“So, it would seem. I think it’s a positive development for them both.” Once we were outside, he turned to face me. “Tell me, what’s up?”
