“Oh my God, what the hell, Drake?” I laughed. “You’ve gone all Romeo on me. That’s so sweet.”

After I snapped out of the sweet fantasy involving me in a tiara and Drake in a cape, I noticed his face covered in sweat and dirt.

He stepped into the lamplight, and his eyes shone with terror.

“What’s happened? I guess you didn’t climb up here to play Romeo after all.”

He fell onto the edge of the bed and held his head in his hands.

I sat next to him and put my arm over his large shoulders. I could smell his tension. “What’s happened?”

“I need some water.”

I stretched over to the side of the bed and grabbed a bottle of water.

He gulped the lot down in one go, then wiped his mouth with his hand. He puffed out a loud breath. “They chased me through the woods.”

My eyebrows rose. “What? Who?”

He wiped his face with his polo top, exposing his abs, and his masculine scent hit me, sending a pulse of heat through me.

Yes, wrong. The poor thing needed my support, not me jumping him. But God, he looked hot.

“I fought Goran off and kicked a gun out of his hand before his brother fired a shot, narrowly missing me. Then I hightailed it into the forest, and Alec chased me.” He rubbed his face. “I would’ve gone to Reboot, but there’s no one there, and I don’t have a gun.”

“A gun?” I frowned.

He told me about how he’d used incriminating footage to blackmail Crisp into backing off me.

I wrapped my arms around him. “You did that for me? Because you wanted us to be together?”

He looked down at his hands. “Well, yeah.”

All I could think of was that he nearly died for me, which meant that Drake did really love me.

That was my heart’s response. My head, on the other hand, was freaking out because I couldn’t lose Drake. I would rather die than lose him.

“Why didn’t you come to me first? We could have plotted something,” I said at last.

He kept rubbing his head and pushing that sexy dark wave away from his face. “Do you have anything to drink? Like something strong?”

I lifted my finger. “One minute.”

I returned holding a bottle of scotch with two glasses. “I didn’t get ice or coke. Is that okay, neat?”

“Any way is fine. I just need something.” He exhaled.

I poured him a half a glass and passed it to him. His shaking hand made me want to cry.

That was my doing. It was because of me that this gorgeous man had nearly died. Reality kicked my butt, and suddenly, I felt like shit for involving him in my train wreck life.

But I wasn’t about to push him away, either.

“You’re right. I was stupid to expect him to buy it. Now I’ve put myself in danger. They’ll fucking kill me for sure.”

The tremor in his voice pained me.

“I won’t let anyone harm you. Ever. I’ll do everything to make sure of that.” Fire bit my belly, as determination to protect him and us took hold. I softened my tone and added, “I think you should show my grandmother in the morning, though.” I cuddled him. “Why don’t you have a hot shower then come to bed?”
