“These look like they’ll fit, luckily. I can see you made a mess of your shoes.”

“I ran like the fucking devil, and I hit a few rocks along the way.”

“I’m sorry.” I slanted my head. “I forgot to ask if you’re injured.”

“I’m fine.” He changed into the jeans and shrugged into a blue polo. “It’s tight.” He pulled down the top, which showed off that buff physique.

“You look hot.”

He must have noticed my starry eyes because he rolled his eyes, and for the first time since arriving, his mouth curved slightly.

“At least the shoes fit.” He tied the shoelaces, then looked up at me again. “We’re really doing this?”

I nodded. “We have little choice.”

I went into the bathroom and filled a small suitcase with makeup and toiletries, then changed into black sweats, sneakers, and a hoody.

He sniffed. “You look like you’re about to pull a job.”

It was nice to see him a little more relaxed, and though I would never admit it, I was more excited than I’d ever been.

It was an adventure. And I loved adventures. With a hot, sexy guy in tow.

Two large suitcases and one small one later, I was ready.

Drake didn’t look so excited, however, as he stared in wonder at my suitcases, scratching his neck, wearing a hesitant expression.

Chapter 24

Drake

Manonsuggestedwedriveto Dover for the channel crossing to France. While her enthusiasm wasn’t lost on me, it was the opposite for me. I hated the unknown, especially with all my responsibilities. Namely, my mother and a job that I liked.

I wanted to keep hitting my head in frustration at how stupid I’d been. Manon was right. I should have spoken to Caroline before confronting Crisp.

“I haven’t got a passport, Manon,” I said, steering the car towards Liverpool instead.

“Really?” She frowned.

“I haven’t gotten around to it. I’ve never left the UK.”

“Oh.” She looked at me strangely, like everyone had a passport.

“I didn’t think I’d be heading to France on such short notice.”

She giggled, which at least eased some tension. I hadn’t realised my shoulders were so tight until that moment.

“I’ve never travelled either.” She looked sad. Like that was something to be ashamed of.

“We’re both young, Manon. There’s time.”

I didn’t feel young. At that moment, I felt like an old man. Stressed over the crazy decision to take off. However, I valued my life, and Manon was right. They would have come for me had I stayed in Bridesmere.

We’d been driving for two hours when a petrol station with a café came into view.

“Can we stop here and get a coffee?” she asked.

A caffeine hit was just what I needed, so I pulled up.
