She kept looking into the rear-view mirror, then me.

“Watch out!” I yelled, as she nearly rear-ended a car.

“You can’t destroy my phone,” she appealed.

“He’s obviously tracking us. I have to.”

She sped up, and my heart raced the faster we drove, considering Manon had only just gotten her license. That kind of driving required experience.

She kept speeding up, narrowly missing a car coming from the other direction while overtaking one in front.

“Careful!” I yelled.

“Don’t fucking yell!” Her screech scraped at my nerves.

I peered at the dashboard, and the needle sat on a hundred miles per hour.

My knuckles turned white as she overtook cars. Horns sounded everywhere.

“Hey, I want to live to see my next birthday.”

An irate driver was close to ramming our arse.

“Where are all these fucking people going to at this hour?” she asked.

“We should take the next turnoff towards Liverpool. If only to get off the motorway.”

I kept looking behind me and saw that the black SUV was only a few cars behind. We turned off the motorway and headed down an open road when a side road came into view.

“Drive in there quick. There’s a forest.” I smashed her phone under my foot and tossed it out the window.

“Was that completely necessary?”

“Yep.”

“But what about your phone?”

Good fucking point.

I took it out of my pocket, crushed it, then flung it out the window.

“We’re now without phones.” Her voice had gone up in pitch.

That seemed to worry her more than us being pursued.

“We’ll buy new ones as soon as we hit Liverpool,” I said, taking a deep, steadying breath after having almost hyperventilated over Manon’s drag racing.

We came to a cottage that looked abandoned, buried in weeds with a gate hanging on its hinges.

“Pull up here. I think we’ve lost them. They didn’t see us turning, and I destroyed the phones before we deviated.”

She turned off the ignition.

I faced her and forced a smile. “Hey, that was outstanding driving.”

As tears poured down her face, I leant over and cradled her in my arms.

“Hey. I’m sure we’re going to be safe.”
