I grabbed a bottle of Coke from the plastic bag, screwed off the top, and passed it to her.

Just as I took a gulp of Red Bull, we heard an engine, and both turned at the same time.

“Fuck. They’ve found us.” I mustn’t have crushed the phones properly.

“Do you think they can see us?” she asked with a tremor in her voice. “We can’t even call for help. You shouldn’t have destroyed our phones.”

“I had little choice.”

“But they’ve found us,” she cried.

She reached into her bag and brought out a flick knife. I took it from her shaking hands.

“I think we should drive off,” she said.

They couldn’t see us because they were driving in the opposite direction. But then, just our luck, a light went on in the cottage.

The car drove up to it, and with us parked behind a bush close by, it wouldn’t take them long to find us.

“Here, quick, swap with me. We have to go. Like now.”

Manon climbed over to my side, and I almost flew into the driver’s seat, turned on the ignition, and drove off without lights.

It was dangerous because the track wasn’t easy to spot, but we found the road, and I breathed again. Switching on the lights, I drove like fury.

Manon kept looking over her shoulder. “They’re coming again.”

I put my foot down, and seeing another turnoff, I took it.

“This is our only option,” I said. “They could easily catch up and shoot at our tyres on that open stretch of road, especially since it’s deserted.”

I entered a thick forest and parked the car somewhere hidden from sight. “Come on, let’s get out. We’ll hide in the bushes.”

We locked the car and raced into the thick scrub, which scratched and scraped at us, while I did my best to clear the way for Manon.

We heard an engine.

“Fuck, I bet it’s them,” she said.

It might have been around five, and with dawn arriving, we would soon be exposed.

It felt like nature assaulting us as we pushed through the scratchy scrub.

“Let’s wait. We’re hidden,” I said.

“I wish we had a gun,” she said.

Despite my dislike of weapons, I had to agree. A gun would have come in handy. It was us or them. And I planned to protect Manon with my life.

Chapter 25

Manon

AsIclutchedmyscratched and bruised arms, I felt things crawling on me, and I kept brushing my face and hair with my hands.

“Shh. Don’t move,” Drake whispered as he held onto me.

My ankles and muscles ached from the awkward squatted position. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I’d seen that kind of thing in films but could never have imagined living it.
