"I could fuck you like this, you know," Taj murmured as air tore past us, cold and biting. "In the air."

I groaned. "Do you ever think about anything other than sex?"

"Not when you're pressed against me," he replied, snarling at a warrior who flew a little too close. He clutched me protectively against his chest, his whole body rumbling with warning, and his wings flapped faster, powerful beats propelling us up through the air. I didn't look at where we were for a single millisecond, or the Murkyr demons below us would be wearing my breakfast.

"Just think about it," Taj murmured, his lips brushing my ear and making a shudder run through me. I clutched him tighter, terrified to fall. "All the new positions we could try, all the places we could fuck; the possibilities are endless."

"Taj," I growled, his breath on my ear making me extra sensitive all over.

"I could knot you at fifty feet in the air. A hundred feet, even."

"I'm going to murder you," I hissed, digging my fingernails into his back, under where his wings connected. It worried me that he had no armour on his chest or back. I might have thought his thick demon skin was impervious, but I had vivid memories of him being sliced apart. I held him tighter.

"Nah," he replied, unworried by my threat. "Your mind would melt and drip out your pussy long before you managed to kill me."

"What are you hovering for?" a familiar and oh-so-welcome voice asked.

My incubus.

I opened my eyes as Taj flew us onto the stone platform that thrust out at the base of the tower.

I clung to Taj a little longer than necessary when he touched down on the 'ground' and turned to find everyone watching Taj a little suspiciously.

"None of your damn business," he muttered, fangs bared.

But there was self-consciousness threaded through his soul and when I threw myself at X and hugged him so tight, so damn relieved he was okay … I wondered if Taj kept us floating in the air so I wouldn't end up pacing and fretting, while the rest of our circle scaled the tower. So I wouldn't lose my shit waiting for X to appear.

I hugged my incubus tight, but peered around his shoulder and met Taj's sharp brown eyes. He avoided my gaze, his scowl growing fiercer. Yup. He'd totally kept us flying to spare me stress.

"Softie," I teased him.

He bared his teeth and snarled viciously. It sounded like he wanted to murder me; no one would guess he was embarrassed by his moment of thoughtfulness.

"Hold," Arkan barked at a Malefic Circle who pushed on the door. "We don’t know we’re alone on the island, and until we have confirmation, proceed as if there’ll be a battle.

“Wraiths will go in first, we'll go in the middle, and the Murkyr circles will cover the back. Stay alert for traps—Eidolon isn't above using dirty tactics and forbidden magic. Expect to meet resistance and rebels."

A strange thing happened as Arkan spoke, delivering commands in a crisp, confident tone. The warriors' surly expressions became fierce with readiness, their wings tucked in tight, postures straighter, and a few of them even nodded with each command like they were committing them to memory.

"Impressive, isn't he?" Joseph murmured, his hand sliding down my arm in a brief caress.

I nodded, a little stunned.

"Circles, work as units," Ark went on, his head high and expression steely. "Wraiths, follow your generals. Eidolon's traitors will have brute force on their side, but that'sallthey have. Use strategy and cleverness, and turn their strength into a weakness."

Some chuckled. Others smiled with bloodthirsty anticipation.

"Wraiths move on three," Arkan called, and began to count down. My blood thrummed with every number he barked, whooshing in my ears when he reachedoneand the wraiths surged through the tower door. Literallythroughthe door. Shadows phased through the wood, and I waited for screams on the other side, but it was strangely, eerily silent.

I dragged in a slow breath, trying to steady my nerves. But since we’d climbed out of the boat, urgency had hammered through my blood like a hammer striking an anvil, shaping ore into deadly metal.

This ends here.

I exchanged a hard look with X, Joseph, Taj, and Arkan. "Can you handle this?"

Taj dragged his teeth over his bottom lip, not remotely happy about the plan, but he nodded.

"He'll know we're here," Joseph said, worry in his green-brown eyes. "There's no reason for us to separate."
