“I mean, can you blame the guy? He has a point.”

“How exactly does he have a point, Jamie?” Danielle asked with a loud scoff of disapproval.

“Think about it. The BDSM community spends a lot of time and effort showing that submissives are not these docile, doormat people, but they are strong and intelligent,” Jamie said matter-of-factly.

“As does the literary community, but what does that have to do with Sadie being an asshole?” Danielle questioned.

“Everything. Sadie fell into a common trap by only viewing female submissives in that light. Thatcher, from what I hear, is a tall, strong, handsome man. She didn’t think for a moment that he would be a submissive.” Jamie’s words only re-lanced the wound that had opened the night before at Haven.

“That’s not true!” Danielle argued Jamie’s point, but she was wrong.

“Yes, it is. I did exactly that. His physical appearance, combined with his attitude and smug approach, made me believe he was a Dominant. But it was wrong of me to judge like that. Jesus, I fucking know better.” I took a long sip of my wine, ready to drown myself in the fermented beverage, but it wasn’t working. “I need something stronger.”

“Whiskey or gin, love?” Jamie asked without hesitation.

“Gin.”

“Oof, that bad?” Danielle asked, eyeing me with more pity than I could handle.

“It’s a huge deal, Danielle. In the community, we don’t judge like that. We accept people as they are, and we work to build up submissives and help them grow. We help each other learn and find a safe place at Haven. And I tore that apart not just with a male submissive, but with a new member of Haven. As a co-owner there… my behavior was beyond reprehensible.”

“Okay, well, obviously I’m the odd man out here, but what do we do now?” Danielle asked.

“I need to apologize,” I answered with a grimace.

“Why all the distaste, love?” Jamie asked lovingly.

“He’s just so… so…”

“Handsome? Sexy? Make-your-panties-wet-with-a-look kind of devastating?” Danielle prattled her remarks off while Jamie chuckled.

“Sounds like a helluva guy, if you ask me,” he said with a wink in my direction.

“No! None of that. He’s arrogant and combative and… and…”

“And he absolutely makes your panties wet and your mind reel, doesn’t he?” Jamie teased me lightly.

“Not in the slightest. It’s the Sahara desert down there.” I rolled my eyes with a scoff, downing the last third of my wine in a single gulp.

“So prove it.” Jamie leaned back in his chair, eyeing me up and down once. The challenge had been thrown down.

“Oooh, sexy show and tell with Shady Lady Sadie!” Danielle nearly bounced in her seat.

“What do you expect me to do? Just slip my panties off and show you?” I guffawed loudly.

“No, love. I expected you to slip those panties off, lay back on this kitchen table and spread your legs while we look at just how dry your cunt is. Unless you’re lying, of course.”

“Jamie, you sly dog! For an asexual man, you sure can turn a phrase as good as any smut writer I’ve ever known. And I’m an author. I know a lot of them!”

“I’m asexual, not boring. I have a very active imagination and a particular propensity for a turn of phrase.” Jamie’s eyes hadn’t left mine. He knew me better than anyone.

“This is ridiculous. I’m not going to do that, and you know it,” I said with a sneer.

“Then admit that he turns you on.” Jamie was refusing to back down from this challenge. I swore he and Danielle were cut from the same cloth.

“I can’t be.” My admission was quiet, mumbled under my breath. And as soon as I said the words, the entire tone of the room shifted.

“Why can’t you be turned on by him, Sadie?” Jamie asked.
