“And say what?”

“Everything. I need to tell him everything.” I bolstered my courage, holding onto the thin shreds of confidence and praying they would strengthen, along with my resolve.

“Okay. When?”

“Now.”

“Now?” he asked, shock written on his face.

“Yes, now. If not now, I’ll talk myself out of it. A wise man once told me that.” I gave him a small smile and a wink as we both chuckled softly, remembering all the times he had spoken those exact words.

“Okay. So are you going over there or —”

“No. I’m going to text him. Ask him to come here. If he will. I don’t know if he will. What if he doesn’t?” Doubt sparked from an ember to a flame, my brows drawn together.

“We can’t control what other people do, love. We can only put our best out there and take comfort in the fact that we are doing what is best for us.”

“You’re right,” I agreed, sighing as I pulled out my phone. I had a text to write.

Thatcher. I want this. Can we talk? I’m at home and ready when you are.

“It’s done.” I sighed. Setting the phone down on the couch, pretending I wasn’t anxious and worried for his response. “Distract me. Keep my mind off of it.”

“I have a date planned with Valen,” Jamie said, and it did the trick.

“Oh, Jamie! I’m so happy for you! When?” I nearly bounced in my seat with excitement for my husband. He deserved to find what he was looking for. Especially after losing Aaron.

“Tomorrow night. I’m pretty excited. They are pretty incredible.”

“You deserve it, my love.” I leaned forward, kissing him softly, just a knock sounded at the door.

“It’s time, Sadie.”

With a deep breath, I got up and answered the door.

CHAPTER16

“Thatcher.”I breathed a sigh of relief. He had come. He had shown up.

“Sadie.” His face gave away nothing. Gone was the handsome smirk, the sparkle in his eyes faded to one of hesitation and more than a little frustration.

“Hi,” I said lamely, fidgeting with my hands nervously.

“Hello.”

“Hi.” I had just said that. I winced at my utter lack of any semblance of grace or social skills.

“Did you want to talk here in the doorway or…”

“Oh, right. Um. Come in. Please.” My words stuttered out nervously. He moved past me silently, walking into the living room, where Jamie still sat on the couch.

“Hey, Thatcher,” Jamie greeted him, standing and shaking his hand with a smile.

“Hey there, Jamie. How’s it going?”

“It’s been good for me. Thanks. Have a seat.” Jamie gestured to the chair, where Thatcher sat, looking every bit nervous as I felt.

“Thank you for coming over.” I faltered, unsure of where to even begin.
