“She was in a restaurant, not only flirting with him, but kissing him! I swear to the Lord Jesus in Heaven, I saw it with my own eyes. She’s cheating on you, Mr. Day, and you deserve better.”

Murmurs rose to a fever pitch, but Jamie quieted them with a calmness I was deeply envious of.

“I promise you, Mrs. Snyder. Sadie is not cheating on me. I’m well aware of her relationship with Mr. Wells.” Jamie announced with a soft chuckle.

“I knew it! I knew that the two of you were involved in some sinister, sinful thing. Amoral swingers, the lot of you! Shame! Shame on all three of you. May God have mercy on all your souls.” If I wasn’t so shocked by her outrage, I would have laughed. She reminded me of a character from one of my favorite movies,The Princess Bride, with all her shrieking. Batshit crazy witch woman.

“Mrs. Snyder, control yourself. Sadie and I are not swingers. We are here to set the record straight. We are polyamorous.” The crowd grew quiet as Jamie spoke. “She and I have been polyamorous for several years now, though we have kept that part of our personal life quiet because, well, it’s private. I am fully aware of her relationship with Thatcher, and I welcome it. He is good to her and good for her. And Sadie is just as accepting of my partner as I am of hers.”

“Wait, you’re sleeping around, too?!” a voice called out.

“No, it’s not like that. Sadie and I both believe that love is boundless. We have much love to share, and we believe that with proper communication, trust, and respect, polyamory works for us. It’s not indecent, and it’s certainly not lying.” Jamie argued.

“How is it not cheating?”

“Simple. Cheating involves lying and deception. We don’t lie or deceive one another.” Thatcher’s voice rang out as he walked up the steps of the patio, joining us. “We work together, and respect one another.”

“How did you and Sadie end up together?”

“What needs could you not give Sadie, Jamie?” Another voice called out.

Jamie looked at me in question, and I nodded my head. Oh, why the hell not? “Jamie is a wonderful husband. I love him and I love our life together. But he is not a submissive.”

Gasps rang out, and, possibly for the first time in my life, I didn’t care.

“Wait, so are you a Dominatrix?” One of the husbands asked, with far too much interest for my liking.

“I don’t use that term personally. I’m a Domme. A female dominant.”

“And that’s where I come in. As a submissive, I am a good fit for Sadie. I am her submissive and her partner.” Thatcher added, and I was a little surprised at his brutal honesty. Many men would not readily admit to being submissive. But that was the difference with Thatcher; he was proud of his submission, as he rightly should be. And it was hot as hell to watch him own it so beautifully.

“Why would you let someone dominate you?” A voice asked.

“Because it’s who I am, as a submissive. But also... because I love her.” Thatcher’s words threw me into a tailspin. Had he really just said that? When he turned to look at me, giving me that easy smile I had grown to love, I realized he did mean it. And perhaps I felt the same. I didn’t have long to think about it before our little moment was interrupted.

“It’s sinful! Degenerate, amoral swingers, the lot of you!” Mrs. Snyder protested, stamping her feet.

“We aren’t swingers,” Jamie said, almost with a droll boredom at her repeated stance.

“And for the record, there’s nothing amoral about being swingers,” Mrs. Jensen interjected, with a blush at her admission.

“I won’t stay in this den of sin a moment longer. Who’s with me?”

She marched off towards the gate of the fence to leave. I watched in worry, but not a single person followed her.

“Bu… pssh… None of you are coming?” she sputtered. When not a single person answered, she stomped off in a furious huff.

There was a moment of quiet at her departure.

“Good riddance!” Danielle called out, shooting me a wink of support.

“Here, here!” Another few people agreed.

And just like that, the moment was over. People went back to talking, likely discussing what they thought of our announcement.

“I can’t believe we just did that,” I whispered to Thatcher.

“And we didn’t die,” Jamie said with a laugh. After that, we had barely a moment’s peace as neighbor after neighbor came up to us with questions.
