“So, honestly, what happened tonight?” Chris asked us.

“Sadie and I came out to the community as polyamorous,” Jamie said.

“Yeah, it was ballsy and amazing, if you ask me.” Danielle reached over, squeezing my thigh, only to find Thatcher’s hand already there. She shot me an impish look and a wink.

“Not only that, but I was honest and told them all that I’m a Domme.” I laughed a little, shaking my head. I still couldn’t believe it had happened.

“That’s a huge deal. I’m impressed.” Chris’s sincerity was heartfelt, and I mouthedthank youto him.

“Honestly, it went really well. You missed one hell of a party, though, bro,” Valen said, chastising their brother.

“Okay, well, who’s to say we can’t still have a party? The night is young, and none of us have work tomorrow, right?” Chris’s easy positivity and spirit were contagious, reigniting all of our energy. We talked late into the night with stories, jokes, and laughter all around.

As the night was winding down, I looked around the table from the kitchen counter where I was refilling drinks. The six of us were quite a little group. I smiled with contentment, feeling an easy joy that I didn’t expect in the aftermath of a night like this.

“You okay there, Sadie-Bug?” Jamie whispered, having followed me into the kitchen to help.

“Beyond okay. You know, Jamie, I know I grew up in one hell of an ugly situation. I made my peace with that long ago. I worked to build a life that I loved and felt safe in. But these last months, after ripping off all the patchwork bandaids and opening up about everything that happened? I don’t know… when I look around at this little group here, I guess I’m starting to realize that family isn’t always about the people who brought you into this world. It’s not about the childrenyoubring into the world, either. Sometimes, the bigger definition of family is about the people who make this world worth living in. And I think we may have found that.”

He put his arms around my waist, his chin on my shoulder as we both looked at this little found family we had at our dining table. Thatcher caught my eye, smiling at me.

“You know, Sadie. I think you may be right.”

And in the end… I was.

Secrets are a funny thing. Sometimes they can be exciting and sexy. Sometimes you hold on to them for so long, they become like a suit of armor you wear to protect yourself from getting hurt. But sometimes, when you let your secrets go, you find out that the truth is more real, more important, and more beautiful than you could ever have imagined.
