His lips curved up into a satisfied smile. “It won’t be a problem. Ever.”

“What if my ass gets bigger? Or what if we’re both tired from being up all night with the baby?”

He moved quickly, eliminating the space between us and pulling me up from my chair. Framing my face with his hands, he declared, “I might not ever have the romantic words, Addy, but one thing I can promise you is I will always want to fuck you.”

No, they weren’t romantic words, but my grin was the goofy kind. I’d never felt more desired than when I was with Leo. “Is it insane to do this?”

“So long as you and I are clear on the expectations, then no.”

No love. No romance. No marriage. The three unattained goals which stressed me out the most would be off the table. Not such a bad thing. “I worry about our compatibility.” Yes, we were enjoying a truce; yes, we seemed to be getting along; yes, his tongue was a seventh world wonder, but what would happen during stressful situations we were bound to have in the future?

His face turned serious. “Come over tonight, and we’ll get to know each other better.”

“Really?” I was surprised he was open to it.

“This is an important decision, and I want you to be sure.”

“Thank you for being patient.”

A growl sounded from his chest as he lifted me onto his desk and stepped between my thighs. “Not so patient with some things.”

His lips slammed against mine, causing such a primal wave of lust to spike through me I could feel myself radiating with it.

But the sound of his computer chiming cut through the moment.

“I have a meeting with Nic to go over a sales pitch.”

Words. He’d said words. But my brain couldn’t grasp them, too fogged up with the haze of physical desire.

He chuckled at my lack of response and leaned down to give me another soft kiss. “I have to go.”

His chuckle only lent to the alternate universe I was in. “Right. Okay.”

He pried my legs from his waist so he could step back. “I’ll cook you dinner tonight?”

“I told Malorie and Craig I’d meet them for dinner. Did you want to come?” I realized my mistake the moment my words landed and his face reacted. This wasn’t a double date. Leo wasn’t my boyfriend. “How about I’ll meet you after?”

“Okay. See you then.”

ChapterTwenty-Two

LEO

Iwas giddy. Not a word I ever would’ve used to describe a single moment in my life prior to my conversation with Addy this morning. Yet here I was, glancing at my watch and counting the minutes until she came over tonight instead of focusing on my brother’s words via the Zoom call.

Of course she had doubts about having a baby together. But the more I thought about this situation, the more confident I was this was the right answer for both of us. Now I just had to convince her without pressuring her. Did I have the capacity to manage such a feat? I was about to find out.

“What’s with you?” Dominic asked after he’d gone over the sales pitch I’d be making this afternoon. He couldn’t do all of the presentations, especially since this particular potential customer was interested in a veteran-owned, veteran-employee company.

“You know me. I’d rather be doing an on-site install than here in a suit for these meetings.” I had a busy day ahead of me. First this sales pitch, then a meeting with HR to discuss hiring, another discussion with Nic to go over upcoming projects, and finishing with my accountant to talk about budgets. All things I should be one hundred percent focused on but apparently would not be.

He chuckled. “What would you do without me?”

Although it was asked in jest, and my typical reaction would be to roll my eyes or say “enjoy more silence,” this time I went for the blunt truth. “I’d be struggling. You’ve made this business better on every level.”

His mouth hung open at the unexpected praise. “Are you sick or something?”

“What? No.” Considering Dominic had fought and beaten childhood leukemia, I made my negative response very clear. But given Addy’s reaction to my compliment, and now Dominic’s, I could see I’d been deficient in showing my appreciation to those around me. “I’m shit with words, but it’s important you know what a contribution you have made to the company. How valued you are.”
