“Were you kidnapped and this is your cry for help? Don’t worry, I’ll dial the authorities and inform them someone is putting a gun to your head to make you say nice things.”

I muttered a string of curses, regretting the entire exchange. “Forget I said anything.”

“Never, brother. Never.” He sung the words like he was auditioning for musical theater.

“Are you done?”

His trademark pretty-boy grin filled the screen. “For now. But in all seriousness, thank you. Your words, you know, the non-shitty ones, mean a lot.”

“I’m hanging up.” This mushy shit was out of my comfort zone. Even with my younger brother, who I loved and respected.

He threw his head back with laughter. “I’m done. Let’s talk about Addison.”

“What about her?” My question came out sharper than intended, causing him to arch a brow.

“I want to ensure you’re being nice. She’s an asset to the company and has—”

I held up my hand. “You don’t have to tell me again. I’m aware.”

His brows went sky high.

“If you make another quip about being kidnapped, I’m seriously hanging up on your pretty-boy face.”

“I will refrain, for now, but only because you called me pretty. Glad you two are getting along.”

Understatement. If she and I went forward with this plan to get her pregnant, I’d need to have a conversation with Nic about just how well I was getting along with our office manager. I wouldn’t dwell on how incredibly awkward that talk would be. Like I’d told Addy earlier, I’d cross that bridge when I had to.

“If there’s nothing else, I need to go,” I told him.

“Good luck with the sales pitch.”

I’d need it. Not all pitches could be done by my brother.

After my meetings, I went home and shoved my suit into a dry-cleaning bag in the hopes I wouldn’t have to wear it again for at least another week. I didn’t know how my older brother and father wore a suit and tie every day. Then again, they enjoyed the corporate world. I only tolerated it for the sake of creating a refuge for veterans like myself who had a tough time transitioning from combat to the civilian world.

I took a long shower, ate leftovers, and then paced my house as I waited for the sound of Addison’s car. Finally, unable to take the anticipation any longer, I sent her a text asking when she would be on her way.

No answer. Not even a notification of the delivery of said message. When I dialed her number, it went straight to voicemail.

By the time she’d pulled into my driveway, I’d started to get irritated. Opening the door before she had the chance to knock, I blurted out, “You’re late.”

She cocked a brow. “I’m unaware we’d agreed on a time.”

I tugged her inside the house, kicked the door shut, and crowded her against the wall. When I started to wonder if I’d come on too aggressive, she grabbed my neck to haul me down for a searing kiss.

“I was hard most of the day thinking about this moment,” I muttered, attacking her clothes.

“Oh, yeah? Did sales go up?”

“Probably not. I was irritable.”

She smirked. “And how are you feeling now?”

“Like I need to fuck you bare.”

Her eyes went wide, and I once again cursed my lack of finesse.

“Damn. Another kink unlocked.”
