“Mm, this looks amazing.” I immediately dug into the fluffy eggs scooped on a buttered English muffin. “You learn to cook from your mom?”

He took the stool beside me with his plate piled high. “Yep. She made sure her boys could feed themselves. Good thing too because I eat a lot. How are you feeling?”

“Okay. Always better the second day.” It was odd to feel so comfortable with this type of conversation with a man.

“Did you hear from Malorie?”

“Huh, I didn’t check.” I walked into the living room and located my phone on the coffee table indicating two missed calls and a text message.

“Yikes. She says Craig broke up with her. And she’s sorry. And yeah, I know, I know, is she sorry because Craig broke up with her or is she sorry because she was nasty to me?” I took my seat again to finish up breakfast. “I should head over there and see how she’s doing.”

“That does not sound like fun.”

“Malorie has never had someone break up with her, so I have no idea what to expect.”

Turned out my cousin was a hot mess on the couch when Leo dropped me off a half hour later.

She blew her nose in a tissue. “I told Craig I’d apologize to you, but he said he wasn’t sure he could be with someone who would be so insensitive. What does that even mean?”

“It means last night you were out of line, Mal.”

“You took me off guard.”

“No, no, no. You do not get to make your reaction my fault. What you said was hurtful. You implied what? I’m dating out of my weight class?”

She started crying again. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to.” Her crying turned into sobs. “I’ve made a terrible mess of things.”

I put her head on my shoulder to comfort her. “Did you call him?”

“Yeah. I left a message, and texted him an apology too. I think he’s the first guy who actually liked me for me and I went and screwed it up.”

“Maybe he needs some time.”

We both turned at a knock on the door.

Her expression turned hopeful. “Are you expecting anyone?”

“Nope.” Getting up, I walked over and glanced through the peephole. “It’s Craig,” I whispered.

Panic washed over her face. “I need to change, and I have no makeup on—”

“He likes you for you, remember?”

She sighed. “Yeah. Okay. Let him in, please.”

I gave a small smile to Craig as I opened the door and left the apartment as he entered it, hoping they could work things out.

ChapterThirty-Two

ADDISON

Leo wasn’t the only person not used to the whole “meeting the parents” part of a relationship. I’d never brought anyone home nor met a boyfriend’s parents. It was bad enough I had to endure my parents’ scrutiny, but I certainly didn’t want to subject anyone else to it.

On the way to his parents’ house, I sat in the passenger side of Leo’s truck and smoothed down my navy jersey dress, something comfortable and casual without being too fussy.

We’d gotten an early start from Vegas this Saturday morning and were entering Leo’s childhood neighborhood four hours later.

“Why are you fidgeting?” He glanced over with a frown.
