Possibility # 7: Maybe he was being mind-controlled? I mean, there could be hundreds of possibilities, but living in Old Corvine, with its lore, there could be thousands! Right?

Running out of ideas, I put my notes away and ushered my eyes closed, praying tomorrow would never come as I recalled the wolf’s cry from my vision.

For some reason, it sounded sad.

* * *

Sunday morning came, and before falling asleep I thought,I should be sleeping in, or watching sitcoms on Netflix with some hot Doritos and a bottle of Coke on the side for a better experience.Instead, I woke up only five hours later, practically dying of respiratory failure. I’d fallen asleep on my stomach, underneath my thick comforter, and could hardly breathe. And the first person who came to mind was Gray.

Was I turning soft for him? Hopefully not, but it was a possibility and I wanted to deny it so badly. Still, I had to confront him.

After showering, I changed into a baby blue turtleneck sweater and skinny jeans, wore a bit of ivory foundation to blur my pores, and brushed my long hair down.

When I arrived at Cole and Gray’s place, I didn’t expect to find the balcony crowded with the problematic faces of Jian and Krystal. Then there was Cole, looking as if the heavens above dropped some onions and meteors on his face. The boy still looked handsome, though. Ugly crying face or not.

Unbelievable. I could feel my face frowning. He’s never cried because of me.

I took cover behind a post, torn between going up there and being as sweet as an angel, or going up there and being the devil incarnate representing all the brokenhearted girls. Needless to say, I ended up waiting for the boys to disappear first.

Once the coast was clear of Cole and Jian, I adjusted my boobs in my bra and sauntered toward Krystal.

Of course, she gave me that annoying, half-smirk the moment she noticed me.

I paused on the stairs, lifting my chin with pride. “What now is your appointment with Cole for coming here unannounced?” I asked in a half-Victorian English accent, and instantly regretted it when I realized I was talking about myself.

Krystal’s shrill laugh burst out of her lips. “Look who’s talking. Did you tell Cole you were coming over here?” Her teasing tone made me lose my sassiness in a fraction of a second.

“Of course!” I exclaimed. “Not …” I continued, “I don’t need to. As his ex-girlfriend and childhood friend, I can go in and out of his house.” Who was I kidding? The birds on the perch, apparently.

“Fine. Go in,” she said, scrutinizing her black nail-polished fingers. “Might as well take care of his new baby.”

“New baby?” I felt like someone was trying to gouge my eyes out.“Wait, he has a kid?”

“You twat,” she muttered. “I’m talking about Keith. Their house was attacked the other night, and now Keith is dying—wasdying. The gang’s off to get revenge.”

“He’sdying?” I almost allowed the situation to tug at my heartstrings, but then I remembered, we weren’t even friends. And why the hell was everyone dying?

“So, here’s what happened. An old man tried to rob him …” Krystal explained everything in detail, her arms crossed over her chest and her tone seemingly fascinated rather than sorry. As I listened carefully to her voice, I noticed some inconsistencies in her story. She couldn’t decide the gender of the thief and kept changing the time of the said event.

Therefore, I concluded she was lying.

“Ah, so it wasn’t a werewolf attack. Then why isn’t he at the hospital? Are you all out of your mind?” I was unable to hide my concern and curiosity. I clenched my jaw, blinking rapidly. “Wait, is Cole out of his mind?”

“Well, um …” Krystal looked at an invisible bubble above her head as if thinking deeply. “Keith is not dying anymore. He’s just … sleeping. But guess what, you twat? Cole was worried about him more than anyone. Honestly, they were giving me these weird‘secretly dating’vibes. If you’re curious, how about you do Cole and yourself a favor and watch over Keith so you can confront the boy? See if you can confirm they’re dating.”

I glared at her, not quite getting what she was trying to accomplish, except to mock me.

“Don’t you want to know the truth?” she asked, goading me.

“The truth?” My ears grew bigger, metaphorically speaking. “You’re kidding me, right? Do you think Keith is the answer to everything just because Cole is worried about him? Newsflash, I’m worried about him too because he’s my classmate. And why the hell would I want anything to do with a boy who broke my heart for no reason?”

Genuinely, though, I wanted to know.

Sometimes people have to lie until that lie becomes the truth.

“Don’t tell me it hasn’t crossed your mind yet? The idea that maybe Cole cheated on you while you two were in a relationship? Of him being gay for Keith? Or the horror of him experimenting on you this whole time? Tell me, don’t you want to know the answers to these questions?” Krystal gave me a cunning smile, her hands on her hips. “Keith would know the truth since it involves him. If you wanna talk to him, then please come in. He’s in Cole’s room, snoozing.”

“Bitch, no. I don’t babysit,” I said coldly.Ugh … but I really want to.
