Jumping from tree to tree, each leap of faith bringing me closer to the ground, I felt like I was fighting on two fronts. First, I didn’t know the guy chasing me. I knew he wasn’t a cat shifter, but panic was screwing with all my senses.

That was the other half of the battle. Something was seriously wrong inside me. I had barely been able to shift into my panther form. My entire body felt wrong all the way down to a cellular level.

Was it just fear?

Or was there something about this particular male shifter?

Landing the next jump with some forty feet above the ground remaining, I shook my head. Yeah, the dude was alpha and could easily shred me if he caught me. But, when it came to pushing his energy at me, my cat shouldn’t feel the same way as if he were an alpha cat shifter. At least it was theoretically easier to shake off an alpha that took a completely different form as my own.

Of course, everything about Night Falls was challenging or outright disproving shifter lore. And an alpha wolf had never tried to push his totem at me.

The big jerk was still chasing and pushing, his jaws clamped around his jeans but the rest of his clothes abandoned at the top of the cliff.

Chasing and gaining and I was about to be toast if I didn’t calm down and concentrate. Never mind that I was a nimble footed panther, his alpha state was just as nimble and hella more powerful in all ways.

He pushed his energy at me just as I jumped for the next tree. I reached out to grab the bark and dig in with my claws.

Surprise!

My claws were gone.

Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!

My cat paws were gone, too. But, instead of a hand, there was…

What the fuck was I looking at?

A wolf’s paw?

On my body?

What the fuck!

Didn’t matter what species the paw belonged to, the damn thing couldn’t dig into the tree. Down I went, slamming hard on the ground a good thirty feet below, my body unable to move as my pursuer landed next to me.

He stared down, I stared up. I knew his jaw was slack, I could see it. But I was pretty sure mine was just as dropped—if not dislocated.

The man was huge, and he was naked but for a leather braided necklace and its pendant, and he was really, really huge everywhere, a fact that brought a flush of heat through my body as he hurriedly shoved both legs and the massive dangly bits between them into his jeans.

He fell to his knees as he finished zipping and immediately placed his hands on my side. I snapped my teeth at him, even though I could tell he was looking for injuries.

I was definitely injured, could feel the pain and my body’s response as it tried to heal with a shifter’s speed. But something was wrong. The parts didn’t feel right. My tail was a big floof and wouldn’t curl like it should. I couldn’t extend my claws or spread the toes apart.

“Calm down, Little Wolf,” the big man said, his voice quite possibly the gentlest I had ever heard. Not even my mother, when I was little, had spoken to me with such soothingly sweet tones.

But why the hell had he called me Little Wolf? Didn’t the giant dolt have eyes?

Sitting on the ground, he gently lifted me onto his lap, waves of healing traveling from him to penetrate deep into my body. Part of me wanted to claw and bite, but I couldn’t move. The joints felt as alien and new as the day I was born.

“Not a wolf,” I croaked as I began to slowly transition back to my human shape. “I am all panther.”

“Which is totally why you fell out of the tree,” he teased, his muscular arms still holding me to his chest as he rocked me like a child in need of consoling. “Cat shifters fall out of trees all the time, I’m told.”

A few more seconds passed, my brain busy trying to find so much as one word to spit out at him, and then he eased me onto the ground. His gaze immediately moved to the small backpack that had been clenched between my teeth until I hit the ground.

“Let go,” he ordered, backing the command with another push of his alpha as he pulled at the bag I clutched against my naked breasts.
