"No being greedy," Henric teased. "With everyone getting a turn, you only have one stab, so choose wisely."

Sorrow darkened my soul.

I had saved these people. Saved their children while forcing my beloved daughter into the same nightmare I lived through.

But I wouldn't beg anyone, wouldn't remind them.

Kitka finally decided on her target. Looking up, I saw her align the tip of the foil with my left eye. The choice would give her a straight path not only to the eye, but to part of my brain.

The last thing I saw was her smile.

"Lights out, bitch."

CHAPTER17

MOSA

Mallory left aloneon his motorcycle. He came back in a black van with tinted windows, followed by a black BMW motorcycle driven by a man who was almost Doone’s twin in size.

The giant was off his bike before Mallory was out of the van. His long stride quickly brought him to where Doone and I waited on the front step of my father’s home. He nodded at Doone and offered me his hand to shake.

“So, you’re Mallory’s cub?” he asked, his tone bordering on astounded. “Was he as surprised as I am to find out he had one?”

“You’re not supposed to enjoy this,” Mallory groused, his hand flapping to motion us all inside his home.

Doone opened the door and let me go in first. I immediately turned to watch how he and the newcomer had to duck to clear the doorway.

“You’re the interrogator!” I blurted as the realization hit me. “In the video with Onyx.”

“Taron’s her mate now,” Doone added. “And they’ve got the cutest little cubs.”

“Cute for now,” Taron laughed. “They’re starting to look more like me than their mother. Chloe’s hair is even turning red.”

“Get friendly on the road,” Mallory groused, bringing up the rear and barking a fresh order. “Help me move the couch.”

By “help,” he meant move it for him. But the task was an easy one given the size and strength of Doone and Taron.

“Put it over by the wall,” Mallory directed.

When they had cleared the couch beyond the area rug beneath it, he pointed me over to one end and, together, we peeled the rug back to reveal a cellar door.

“Didn’t know that was there,” Doone murmured.

Mallory rolled his eyes so hard I finally saw a similarity between the two of us. I snorted as it hit me.

“That’s the point,” Mallory deadpanned as he lifted the door to expose a well-stocked armory of weapons, ammunition, and what amounted to a natural cold storage cellar.

As soon as the snort burst through my nose, his gaze slid over to me.

“And what’s funny about that?” he rumbled.

“She slipped up, my mother. Just once that I can remember,” I answered. “I was maybe thirteen and had just rolled my eyes at her so hard I could see yesterday. She said I was just like mydamnfather. It confused the hell out of me. Henric doesn’t eye roll. It would interfere with the bastard’s constant smirk.”

Thinking about that smirk drove my thoughts straight back to my mother, my brain punching me in the face over how I had abandoned her.

“Don’t,” Mallory growled when my despair perfumed the air. “We’ve got shit to do and we need clear heads. If I know Justine half as well as I think I do, getting you safely away was her only priority.”

I could have told him that priorities change when you’re in a cage that's barely bigger than your body, ice water from a pitcher being poured through the small holes to wet you as the room's massive air conditioner is on at full blast. Only the weather was already cold in Rockford. Henric probably had her at the creek if he was punishing her with the cage.
