Only Doone remained standing. He swept me up into his arms as pure anguish vibrated past his lips in an unearthly howl. My body felt like I had been captured by a wave of fire. Only it wasn’t the acidic burn of the datura coursing through every cell. It was pure energy—an alpha’s energy unlike anything I had ever experienced.

And it was coming from my mate.

CHAPTER36

DOONE

Everyone around me fell—someto their knees, some face first onto the floor or furniture. I was stealing something from them—I knew that deep down even if I didn’t know how. And the theft was weakening them, but I couldn’t stop, didn’t want to. How could I stop when everything I stole I gave to Mosa, my alpha energy pouring into her, healing her from Kitka’s deadly bullets laced with the same poison that must have covered the she-cat’s knife.

Axel and his sons rushed in. They fell to the ground the same as the others.

“Stop…”

The whisper was broken in places, but the loving hand cupping my cheek held firm.

I looked down at Mosa. Her eyes were open, the emerald gaze imploring me as she repeated the simple command.

“Stop.”

Obeying, I cut the flow and fell to my knees, Mosa still clutched against my chest.

As if they had been holding their breath the entire time, there was a collective gasp for air from the fallen. Hands moved like drunken spiders while legs made feeble attempts to bend. Onyx made it onto her elbows and knees as Clover shouted in everyone’s earpiece.

“What is the effing sitrep!”

My throat seized up as I started to reply.

What the hell was I going to say? That I did this—whatever this was?

Mosa answered for me, her voice still weak. “Threat is under control. Henric and Kitka are dead.”

“It isn’t under control on our end!” Clover uncharacteristically snapped back. “We have an army approaching from the southeast.”

“Details, little wolf,” Taron demanded, finally sitting up, but his body swaying like it was his first time on a boat—a boat being batted around by a hurricane.

“A fucking horde of wolves. Is that detail enough? Kalchik’s people went a hundred percent silent this morning on their phones, now I know why. They left their devices behind in a lame attempt to avoid location tracking, but some of those phones are still paired with vehicles. They are coming at the leap en masse.”

Clover’s mate Joshua came on the line. “They will hit the southeast section of the compound. Unless they deviate course, the first leap members they’ll encounter are teens and the younger cubs they’re babysitting during the meeting.”

On his feet, one hand on his head as if he was trying to keep his brain from leaking out, Buzzsaw bellowed as only an elk can. The sound reminded me of the Ringwraith screams from the Lord of the Rings movie.

“They’ll be dealing with me,” he snorted, “before they ever reach those kids!”

A male leap member near Buzzsaw started to lift off the floor. Buzzsaw leaned over, one hand sliding a pipe bomb from his bag at the same time.

“Unless you’re heading to protect your young, you’re getting back on your belly or I’ll shove this up your ass and trigger the charge! Same goes for all of you city cats!”

Justine, on her feet with Mallory next to her, scanned the faces in the room before speaking in a strong, powerful voice.

“If you can stand and fight, get to your young and protect them. But do not engage Kalchik’s wolves unless absolutely necessary.” She looked at Buzzsaw. “Do you remember the cars you targeted?”

He nodded.

“Good, gather the explosives back up so these parents can protect their children.”

“On it,” he said, running from the room.

With everyone finally standing, some having to hold one another up, Justine approached me.
