“So,” I began once Luca was finished and sat back to start eating. “Someone want to tell me what is g-going on and why we need s-security?”

“Eat first, Blake. We can talk afterwards,” Dec told me, but I couldn’t. I needed to know.

“No,” I snapped, dropping down my fork and looking from Dec, back to my Dad. “I n-need to know, now. Is it…them? Are they looking f-for me? Did they hit me with th-that car?” My stuttering was worse, since I was so nervous and struggling to concentrate through the flashbacks that were fighting to come through.

“We don’t know,” Dad sighed as he put down his cutlery and wiped his mouth with a napkin. He turned his gaze to me with a soft, soothing smile. “We had some concerns after the accident involving Trent and I. There was no reason for the brakes to fail on my car. It was practically brand new. We spoke with the police, and they had techs look over the wreckage of my Range Rover,” he went on.

“It wasn’t an accident?” I gasped with horror.

“We only found out last week, but no – it wasn’t an accident. Someone tampered with my brakes so that they would fail,” he told me, and tears instantly filled my eyes as my chest tightened. Dad and Trent could have been killed in that accident! Was that my fault? Had my monsters come to their door?

“It’s going to be okay, baby girl,” Grey said from beside me, startling me slightly as he wrapped his arm around me tightly.

“Then you were hit by that car and Declan was sure it wasn’t an accident,” Dad continued. I looked across the table to Declan, and noted no one was eating now, everyone just looking to me with concern.

“It came from nowhere. I think they were parked in the street with their lights off, just waiting for an opportunity,” Dec explained.

“You didn’t see who it was?” I asked.

“No. It all happened so fast and I was just trying to get to you.”

“We don’t know who it is, tiny. The police couldn’t find any fingerprints or DNA evidence on Dad’s car and we have nothing else to go on right now,” Trent added.

“But it could be them, couldn’t it? They tr-tried to…to kill me but I….I d-didn’t die. They could be trying to finish the job. I mean, I sh-should have been in the car with you that day you had the accident,” I pointed out as my whole body started to tremble with fear. I looked to my dad, willing him with my stare to just be honest and not try to protect me. I needed the truth, no matter how much it scared me. I needed to know what was happening.

“It’s a possibility,” he confirmed with a nod.

“Oh God!” I gasped.

“We’re not going to let anyone else hurt you, babe,” Tom promised, as he appeared beside me. He pulled me from Grey’s half hug, and lifted me into his arms. I instantly melted against him, needing the safety of his strength and heat around me. He sat in the chair I had vacated and settled me in his lap.

“That’s why Luca is here. He works for one of the top security firms in the state and he is going to help us keep you safe. We have already had a new security system installed, with cameras all around the property. We have motion sensors, so if anyone tries to get over the wall surrounding the house, we will be alerted,” Dad explained.

“We have also started an investigation into the two incidents. My team are working on figuring out who is doing all of this,” Luca added, his voice deep and a little intimidating.

“Luca will be with you if you need to leave the house alone for any reason. He will drive you where you need to go, and act as security,” Dad told me.

“So you think it’s j-just me that they’re after?” I asked.

“Yes. You said it yourself,” Luca replied. “You should have been in the car when the brakes were messed with, then the hit and run was targeted on you.”

“That doesn’t mean that it’s those monsters though, Blake. We have some other ideas, one being that sick fuck from the hospital, Terry, and the other, and most likely, I think, being Abby,” Trent cut in.

“Abby?” I gasped. “Would she…is she capable of th-this? Of t-trying to kill us? Because what? You br-broke up with her?”

“She works the reception desk at a repair shop and I’m sure she can convince the guys who work there to do her bidding,” Trent answered, with a growl.

“Plus, she was here the night you were hit, and she was really pissed with you,” Liam added. I nodded as I recalled the hatred on her face as Liam had dragged her down the driveway that night. She had definitely been pissed off enough with me to do that.

“And T-Terry?” I hated even saying that sick prick’s name.

“He is less likely, since it’s not possible for him to have tampered with Dad’s car, but you were hit just days after you raised charges against him. We need to look into him at least,” Trent explained, and I nodded, but I was pretty sure Terry could be discounted from any investigation. It was very hard to imagine him having enough about him to fly across the world to hurt me. He was a lazy bastard. That much I knew from the time I had spent in that psych ward. He was constantly getting into trouble with other staff members for not doing his job properly.

“I don’t think it’s him,” I told them all. “I d-doubt that prick has ever even l-left the country.”

“It’s being investigated, sweetheart. We’ll find out who did these things,” Dad assured me. “Until then, all that matters is keeping you safe. I need you to be careful, and make sure Luca is with you if one of the guys can’t be. You cannot leave this house alone until whoever this is, is stopped.”

I looked over to Luca and felt the nausea within me rising again. Could I really be in a car alone, with this behemoth of a man. I didn’t know him. How could I trust him?
