“D-Derek,” he gasped as he glanced to me. “I w-was just going t-to the store. I don’t…h-how did this happen?”

“We’re going to take good care of you Derek,” I assured him as I fastened a neck brace on as a precaution. “Those guys are working on opening the door so they can get you out, then we’ll get you to the hospital.”

“M-my wife. She’s waiting for me. Diapers…we were out of diapers and she…she’s waiting for them,” he told me, his trembled words giving away the fear he was feeling.

“You have a baby then?” I asked, hoping keeping him talking would help him calm a little, while I worked to check his vitals and assess how badly he was injured by the twisted metal that had him pinned.

“Joey. He’s only three months old. I n-need to get back to him. He c-can’t lose his father…not now…not l-like this,” he cried, beginning to really panic.

“Hey.” I placed a hand on his forearm and locked my eyes with his. “You are going to get home to Joey. I know this is scary, but those guys out there are the best at what they do. They’re going to get you out of here.”

“My legs…they’re trapped.”

“The car has you pinned, and caused some injuries to your legs, but I don’t see anything major. Your vitals are strong too. I know it’s hard, but try not to panic. We’ve got you,” I assured him.

A moment later the fire fighters had the driver’s side door open and then just minutes later they had Derek free of the mangled wreckage of his car.

By the time we had him in the ambulance and Caleb was driving us towards the ER, I had confirmed that there were no major, life threatening injuries. Derek had a nasty laceration on his right leg and the left wasn’t much better, but I was pretty sure he would only require stitches. Apart from some bruising, from the seat belt, and a few superficial cuts, he was doing just fine. He’d been lucky. When we’d arrived at the scene and I’d seen the state of that SUV, I had feared we’d be dealing with far worse.

It was always hard not to wonder about the traffic accident that had killed both of my parents when I faced a scene like that one. It was hard to stop my mind from thinking about whether or not my mom and dad had felt fear like Derek had felt, or whether they had suffered before they died.

But that was the biggest reason I had chosen the career I had. I wanted to be the first person to arrive to help people who needed it, on what was likely one of the scariest days of their lives. I wanted to be able to save people the way no one had been able to save my parents that fateful night.

“I’m out of here, man. See you tomorrow,” Caleb told me as he grabbed his bag from the bench in the locker room and almost ran to the door.

“Yeah, see ya,” I told him with a nod. Once we had Derek handed off to the ER team, our shift was over and it had been a relief. It had been a long, and very tough one and I was beat.

Having already taken a quick shower, I finished pulling on the jeans and sweater I had brought with me to change into. I normally just opted for sweats or something equally comfortable to pull on after a shift, but it was Simon’s birthday and I was headed to his place for dinner, so I wanted to make an effort.

Once I had my sneakers on, I took the time to neaten up my hair, then I grabbed my bag and headed out, eager to get to Simon’s and see Blake. There was nothing better after a crappy day than having her in my arms.

“Oh, Greyson!” I heard called behind me and I let out a small growl of annoyance. I knew who was calling for me and I didn’t have the time or patience to deal with her. I turned around, reluctantly, and found Kim, one of the ER nurses, scampering towards me.

I had known her since I started working there three years before. She was a few years older than me and had a serious addiction to fake everything. Her tan, which was always a bright orange color was the most obvious thing, but her fake eyelashes, long blond hair extensions, and very obvious breast implants were glaringly blatant too.

Some guys might consider her attractive with her long lean frame and blue eyes, but she was not my type in the slightest. For a start, I preferred all parts of the women I dated to be their own. That wasn’t all that put me off Kim though. Her personality just didn’t seem like anything I would want either. I had seen her interact with other staff in the hospital and with patients in the past, and she was very short with them, maybe even rude at times. She had no compassion or patience for anyone, and on the numerous times she had pinned me down in an attempt to flirt, all she ever did was talk about herself and how amazing she was.

I honestly had no idea how I could make things any clearer that I wasn’t interested. Of course I had always been polite about it when I gave her the brush off, but I had also been clear – especially since Blake came into my life. It seemed Kim had no desire to give up though, even though I had been telling her for weeks that I now had a girlfriend I was very serious about.

“Trying to sneak away from me then, weren’t you, you naughty boy?” she giggled as she pointed a finger at me.

“Did you need something, Kim? I’m headed out and I’m late to meet Blake,” I told her as I tried to back up a step so the finger she was pointing didn’t touch my chest.

“Oh, well I just needed you to sign the paperwork for that last guy. You forgot to sign off,” she said as she pushed her huge chest out even more and twirled a lock of her long ponytail around her finger. I knew she was trying to look sexy, but what she was offering me didn’t appeal.

For me, sexy was Blake – Dark hair, beautiful brown eyes, and her perfect, petite body that I was desperate to get hands on every time I laid eyes on her. Sexy was her cute laugh and her incessant curiosity about things. Sexy was the way she tried hard to care for everyone around her, no matter what. Blake was all I wanted, and this woman was stopping me from getting to her.

“I signed off the paperwork on the last patient,” I almost growled, knowing she was lying to get me talking to her.

“Really?” she asked as she glanced to the paperwork clutched in her hand, then back to me. “You’re right. So you did. Silly me. Maybe I need to lay off of all the working out. I think the pole dancing class I did last night may have been a step too far,” she giggled as she fluttered her fake eyelashes at me.

“If everything’s good then, I really need to get going,” I said, but I was already turning my back on her to get the hell out of there.

“Sure. Are you working tomorrow? Maybe we could grab coffee and catch up at lunch?” she called after me.

“Can’t. I’m meeting my girlfriend,” I lied, emphasizing the word ‘girlfriend’ as much as I possibly could. I don’t know what else she said because I was gone, racing out of the building as fast as I could, away from her and towards the woman I was falling crazy in love with.
