“This is really good, tiny. Maybe you should be cooking more often around here,” Trent told me.

“I think I’d like that,” I agreed easily.

Within a few minutes the guys had emptied their plates and were fighting for what was left over in the pan. I just sat back watching them and chuckling at their antics, chuffed they had enjoyed what I prepared.

Just as they finally decided to stop bickering and split what remained onto their four plates, a piercing alarm started to beep throughout the house, startling me badly. I slammed my hands over my ears and looked to Luca with panic, knowing it had to be one of the security alarms he had installed around the place.

“What the fuck is that?” Trent called loudly as all four of them dropped their plates to the counter. Luca pulled out his mobile phone and looked at the screen.

“Someone just tried to access the front gates with the wrong code,” he told us over the blaring alarm. He hit his screen a few times and, thankfully, the alarm cut out. “Stay with Blake,” he ordered before anyone could say a word, then he was gone towards the front door.

“S-someone is br-breaking in?” I stuttered as fear and adrenaline rushed through me all at once.

“No, babe,” Tom said as he rushed over and pulled me in against his chest, wrapping his arms around me. “They wouldn’t try to enter a code at the gate if they were breaking in. It’s just a misunderstanding or something.”

“He’s right, tiny. Luca will deal with it, whoever it is,” Trent agreed.

I felt Liam behind me, his hand running soothingly up and down my back below where his brother’s arm was holding me tight against his front. I was shaking with adrenaline, but I fought hard to tell myself over and over that Tom was right – no one would try to guess the access code if they were breaking in. They’d have just gone over the wall, or tried to anyway. It was just some kind of mix up.

“TRENT!” The high pitched squeal echoed through the house and I tensed even more in Tom’s arms at the familiar, very unwanted voice. “GET OUT HERE RIGHT NOW!”

“Stay here,” Trent growled, then I heard him marching towards where the voice was coming from outside.

“What d-does she want?” I asked as I pulled back from Tom and looked to Trent’s retreating back.

“It doesn’t matter. Trent and Luca can get rid of her. You okay? You want to go out back, or to your room?” Tom asked.

“No,” I shook my head as I got to my feet. “I want to know what she’s d-doing here. I d-don’t want her anywhere near Trent.” With that I started for the front of the house, determined to at least be at Trent’s side as he dealt with his nightmare ex.

The twins were calling after me as I stormed through the house, my fists clenched tight in an attempt to stop the rushes of shaking that continued to shoot through my body.

By the time I stepped onto the drive, Trent stood opposite a clearly raging Abby. She was dressed in a skin tight pencil skirt, with a red, collared shirt tucked into it, the neckline unbuttoned to the point of indecency. She was wearing black, patent, sky-high stilettos, and as always, her hair and makeup were immaculate. She’d be so beautiful if it weren’t for the bitter, twisted scowl marring her face as she glared at my brother and Luca who was close behind him.

“I had nothing to do with it, Trent!” she raged. “I was wasted. There’s no way I could have even driven my car. You have to tell them. I’m going to lose my fucking job if you don’t!”

“Not my problem. If it wasn’t you then I’m sure the police will come to that conclusion in the end,” Trent shrugged, keeping his cool despite Abby screaming in his face.

“Three times!” she squealed. “Three fucking times I’ve been brought in for questioning! They think it was me, Trent. You have to help me. It’s all your fucking fault! You brought that little bitch into my life and now I’m going to end up being arrested because of her!”

“Do not talk about Blake like that,” Trent warned. “And the police must have something if they brought you in three times.”

“No they don’t. They don’t have anything except the word of that fucked up, psycho bitch sister of yours!” She looked angrily to the house as she screamed, then her eyes locked on mine and her rage intensified as her face turned bright red and her jaw tensed.

“YOU FUCKING BITCH!” She screamed as she tried to run for me, but both Trent and Luca grabbed her and hauled her back. I wanted to have the strength to tell them to let her go. I wanted to have the confidence that I could handle her myself, but I knew I couldn’t, especially not when she was as worked up as she was. She had at least half a foot in height on me, and she looked much more physically fit and toned than I was. I was no fool. If I took her on I was going to lose.

“Blake, go back inside!” Trent barked at me. I looked to him, unsure. I didn’t want to leave him to deal with this alone, but clearly I was making her anger even worse.

“Come on, babe. Luca and T can handle her,” Tom told me as he slipped his hand into mine and pulled me towards the house. Liam appeared at my other side and took my free hand, then they both walked me inside, closing the door on the drama behind us.

“I think she’s t-telling the truth,” I told them as we resumed our seats at the counter in the kitchen. “I don’t think she did it. Luca g-got a picture and it was a bl-black car. Abby’s is white and she was pretty wasted that night, wasn’t she?” I looked to them both for a response.

“I wouldn’t put anything past her, Blake,” Tom replied.

“The police must have reason to keep questioning her. They obviously haven’t been able to rule her out of the investigation,” Liam added. That did make sense. The police wouldn’t just waste their time questioning Abby of they had no reason to. It gave me a little hope that maybe it was her. Maybe these screaming displays she put on, protesting her innocence, really were just over the top shows meant to throw us off of the truth, that it had all been her doing. Had I been gullible to believe her? God, I hoped so. If it was Abby who had been terrorising me, then I could handle that. It was awful and I knew she could have killed me if I hadn’t been as lucky as I was, but it being her was a hell of a lot better scenario than it being those monsters who had come for me again.

“Blake? You with us?” Tom asked as he rubbed a soothing hand in circles on my knee.

“Yeah. Sorry. It’s just b-been a long day,” I sighed.
