Once we reached the car, Trent finally lowered me back to my feet, but he had succeeded in his endeavour – I was laughing hard at his antics despite my worry over Grey.

“You need to laugh more, tiny. We don’t hear that sound enough from you,” Trent sighed as he opened the back door of Luca’s large Escalade which we had travelled in.

“Trust me, you’ve heard it a lot m-more than anyone else in my life ever has,” I assured him.

“I want to hear it more. I think I might have to make it my personal mission,” he mused with a mischievous smile.

“Oh God, not s-sure I like the sound of that,” I groaned, but I couldn’t hide the smile on my face. Just the fact that he wanted to make me happy was enough to have me feeling emotional.

“How do you feel about pranks?” Trent asked and I just groaned, dreading what was to come, but the joking mood was killed for me when Grey appeared at the car. He was looking at Trent, and not me, which wasn’t like him.

“What’s wrong?” I asked him instantly, but still he didn’t look at me.

“I need to go, T. You good here? I can ask Dec to come meet you?” he asked.

“No need. We’re all good. What’s going on? Work?”

“Something like that,” Grey hedged. “I gotta go. Speak to you later, Blake.” He looked up at me very briefly when he said my name, but before I could utter a word in reply or even meet his eyes, he had turned his back on me and was walking away, tapping on his phone as he went.

“That was weird,” Trent said as he climbed into the car beside me and closed the door.

“Yeah,” I agreed. I forced myself not to turn in the seat and look for Grey, but it was almost impossible to do. It was ridiculous but I was feeling hurt that he had walked away without even a quick peck on my cheek. Generally, when the guys left me, they would at least give me a peck, usually after a huge bear hug first. The way Grey had just walked away had left me feeling cold.

Luca and Dell climbed into the front seats, while Lewis trailed us in another car. I stayed quiet for the first few minutes of the journey, just wrestling with my thoughts and trying to convince myself Leah really was someone who worked with Grey.

“Trent?” I turned to him. He looked up from whatever order he was in the middle of placing onAmazonand instantly locked his phone and pocketed it when he saw my face.

“Okay, lay it on me,” he told me, making me smile a little.

“Do…do you know who Leah is?” I knew I shouldn’t bring him into whatever was going on, but I needed to know.

“Leah? What made you ask that?” The look on Trent’s face only worsened my concern. He definitely knew who Leah was.

“That’s who called Grey. Is she a-an ex or something?”

“Shit!” Trent cursed as he pulled his phone back out and scrolled to Grey’s number. He hit the contact and looked worried sick as it started ringing.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. “Who is she?”

“Bad news,” Trent sighed as he gave up on Grey answering and ended the call. “Luca. We need to turn around. I need to find Grey,” he called to the front.

“Trent, tell me what’s going on,” I demanded, now worried about Grey.

“Leah is his sister. She’s a drug addict and last time she arranged to meet him it was a set up. He got jumped by three guys and robbed. They broke two ribs and took his wallet, his watch, even his fucking sneakers. What the fuck was he thinking?” Trent sounded frantic as he started to look all around us the minute Luca turned the car around.

“Why would she do that if she’s h-his sister?” I asked, but it was a stupid fucking question. I, more than anyone, knew the lengths an addict would go to in order to feed their habit.

“She doesn’t care about anything but her next fix. Hasn’t for a very long time,” Trent answered as he tapped out a text on his phone.

“Why would he go and meet her then?”

“Because he thinks he can save her. Every damned time she comes crawling to him for money, he goes to her, believing it’ll be the time he can convince her to get help. It never works, and twice she’s had guys work him over and take his money and anything of value.”

“Oh God. We have to find him,” I gasped.

“We will. I’ve sent a message to the others too. They’re on their way.”

I was silent as Luca sped back the way we had come, the fear for Grey so great within me I couldn’t do anything but frantically search out of the window for him and pray he was alright.
