Drey was quiet, but I knew he was grinning like the shithead he was, so I flicked him off.

“It’s cool.” He coughed. “It’s a good thing.”

“Part of therapy. Thanking those who helped me get on the right track.”

Drey snickered, and I heard shuffling.

I almost wished I’d had Mr. Magic in hand so I could smack him with it. I’d gotten so good around the house I didn’t need it at all.

“I’m messing with you, D. It’s cool.” He smacked my shoulder, which gave me the chance to punch him in the gut.

“I said to not say a word.”

Drey coughed hard. “If you weren’t blind I’d kick your ass right now.”

“Bring it, big brother.” I tackled him at the waist, knowing he’d keep his balance, the martial arts stud that he was.

He grabbed me by the shoulders and twisted me until I was almost upside down, but he was holding me.

“Nice moves for a blind guy.”

I punched his side and kicked my feet to get momentum, and he dropped me. Keeping one hand on his chest, I stayed oriented, which let me sweep his feet.

“Son of a bitch!” Drey thudded against the ground. “What the hell are they teaching you over at the hospital?”

“This is all black bag stuff, buddy.” I felt around and knocked into the barstool by the center island. Pushing myself up, I said, “Jeff, man. He’s wicked.”

“I’m so getting him in the club. If he can teach a blind man to knock me on my ass…”

“Jerk,” I said, reaching for him.

Drey yanked my hand, but I was ready and held my ground as I pulled him up. “You’re a tough motherfu—”

“Don’t forget it, either,” I said.

“My sore ass won’t let me. When’s Lizzie picking you up?” His voice moved toward the door, and I heard a distinct limp.Sweet.

“What time is it?”

“Eight fifteen.”

“Okay, then, in about five minutes or so.”

“You can kick my ass but not tell what time it is?” Drey asked.

I flipped him off again.

“How do blind people tell the time, anyway?”

“Tactile watches, asking Siri, there are a few ways.”

“Hmmm.” Shuffling stopped, and the air turned very silent. He might be standing at the door staring at me.

“What’s up?” I asked.

He didn’t answer, but the screen door creaked open. “Proud of you, Damon,” he said, then walked out.

Wow.
