“Oh, I think she will!” I could hear the smile in Drey’s voice. “You guys are pretty young, though.”

“And we both know how fast shit can change.”

“You sound like Angelina when she was all about marrying Hunter. Except saying shit.” Drey laughed.

“I heard that story. Man, that’s nuts. Hunter’s dad almost killing him like that. Shit.”

“Then go for it. When you know you know, I guess, right?”

“Don’t wanna steal your thunder, though, you know, the party being a celebration for your wedding.”

“Trust me. This party is more about you being alive and healthy than anything. It’ll be even better turning it into an engagement party.”

“Just wish Mom was around.” My chest ached as I said that. She’d been on her way to sobriety when Walker came in and ruined it.

“Yeah.”

“I told her, though,” I said, smiling as I filled a glass of water. “Found my way to her grave.”

“Really? On your own?”

“Let’s just say I’m glad you guys weren’t around, because I bit it, twice, but I found it.”

“Sober Mom would have loved Lizzie.” Drey’s voice sounded closer. He must be sitting at the island.

“You got to see her sober for a couple months there. What was she like?” I took a drink of my water.

“You don’t remember much when she was sober those few times, huh?”

“Nope.” I didn’t remember any time she was sober, but I didn’t say that.

“Mom was feisty. Had a sense of humor. Sweet.” He let out a sigh. “Asked about you all the time. Sad that you were messed up in that gang shit.”

“Tell me about it.” I rested my hand on the tabletop.

“You’re out now. That’s all that matters. Scott or Rain been snooping around again at all?”

“Lizzie said she saw Rain a while ago in the hotel lobby, but nothing since.”

“Dumbass,” Drey said. “It’s been months. They have to know you’re good to go.”

“Yep. Still blind.” I fisted my hand. “And not snitching.”

“Rain was in the club last night,” Drey said, and I heard the tension in his voice.

“Shit, really? What’d he want?”

“Casing the joint, I think. Maybe even looking for you.”

“What would I be doing in a bar?”

“Who knows? Those guys are nuts. Bill ran him out, though.”

“Tomorrow I’m coming into work with you. I need to talk with Bill.”

“About what?”

“Just to tell him—and don’t you say one damn word—to tell him thanks.”
