Bill’s big body lumbered through the doorway. “How’s our girl?”

“Bill?” I glanced at Angelina.

“He was just hanging out here. Almost broke down the door when you first started screaming.”

“Had two heart attacks.” He eased into the room, watching me carefully. “Not nice to do to a guy my age.”

I laughed. “Sorry. What are you doing here? I mean, thanks, but…”

“Hunter’s at the club, so I wanted to be around.”

“Are we in danger?”

“No, hon.” Angelina patted my cheek. “I wanted someone around. That’s all. You’re not the only one freaking out a little here.”

I hugged Angelina. My best friend in the world. Pretty much like Niagara Falls, the tears poured over my lids. Flashes of Mom, lying on the snow, surrounded by blood, bombarded me, and I fisted my hands in Angelina’s shirt.

She held me tighter.

I was a gazillion miles from New York, and here I was, in danger and scared.Again.

After a few minutes of sulking, I hopped into the shower, bolted through a quick cleanup and headed for the door, Angelina right behind me.

I pulled the door open, took a step, then slammed right into a wall of dizziness. The hallway tilted. Blurred out of vision.

I grabbed the doorframe and sucked in a breath.Damn it. I knew that feeling.

Chapter Fifty

Damon

Jabafterjabhelpedhammer the rage from my system. Like a tarry ooze, fear, anger, and more fear clogged my pores.

Lizzie was hurt on my watch. Had a gun pointed at her head. The fear in her whimpers ripped a hole in my chest bigger than the Grand Canyon.

It was my fault. Mine.

“There isn’t going to be much left of the bag,” Drey said, shifting his hold on it. “Can’t believe how strong you’ve gotten, man.”

“Lot of good it did, huh?”

“I know how it feels to not be able to protect what’s yours, man. I get it. But she’s fine. She’s strong.”

“And she saw almost exactly the scene that killed her parents. I can’t believe it, Drey. Her mom was shot in the head after a car crash?” My stomach bottomed out.

“She was a judge on a human trafficking case, and—”

“It was a hit. I get it. Holy shit, Drey.” I couldn’t believe it. Her family was murdered. Right in front of her.

“Look. It’s not my story to tell, man—I just needed you to understand what was going on with her. Why she was so hysterical.”

“Two sedatives to calm her down. The night terrors.” I pounded the bag some more.

I’d stopped by twice to check on her since that party night and almost puked both times. I’d experienced her night terrors once, but this,Holy shit, the screams haunted my sleep these past two nights.

And it was my fault.

“At least you’re not on the ground, passed out somewhere,” Drey said.
