“So, Scottwasyour boy?” I snagged a slice of pizza for myself.

“Yeah. He’s dangerous, though, so steer clear of him, okay?”

“Wasn’t looking to start a book club with him.”

Damon laughed and bit into his pizza. “Beautifulandfunny. I hit the jackpot, didn’t I?”

I wasn’t so sure aboutjackpot, but I kind of felt lucky being with Damon, too. Maybe he was right about the fitting together. One freak to another.

Chapter Fifteen

Damon

“Youdidn’tleaveanyunderwear lying around, did you? Want to run in and clean up?”

“You wouldn’t see it if I did, so there,” Lizzie teased.

I laughed. “Finally, getting you to joke about it. Progress noted, young padawan. So, where are we?”

“In about fifteen steps we’re going to go through a door that Lucien, the doorman, is holding open for us.”

“So, you’re a Bettyandloaded. I’m a lucky bastard.” I so didn’t deserve any type of luck. And actually, now that I had a full stomach of some of my favorite food, I’d had an epiphany. I was blind because of all the shit I’d done.

I deserved it.

I’d failed Mom. Threw shit at Drey. Didn’t have a job, a girl—well, hopefully now I had a girl—and didn’t have shit to show for my life other than a gang tattoo on my wrist that I couldn’t even see anymore.

But maybe me not dying meant I got a second chance? Was that even possible? Maybe I could ride this shit out, pay my penance, then kick my life into gear.

Starting with Lizzie.

“Hey Lizzie. Doing okay?” a guy asked.

“Hey Lucien, yeah, I’m good. Thanks,” she answered, and a beat later she added, “I promise.”

Her voice was quieter on that last statement. I wondered if the guy said something more that I’d missed.

“Come on,” she said, ushering me onward.

Echoing footsteps followed, and my stomach churned. Might have eaten too much. I gripped her elbow a little tighter, hoping she’d slow down. All I needed to do was a face-plant in front of everyone here.

Well, if there were a lot of people. Sure sounded like it from the echoing.

“Sounds big in here,” I said, wondering if I was right.

“It is. Elevators in ten steps. Slowing.” I both hated and loved that she told me what was going on. Hated that she had to do it so I wouldn’t ram smack into something, and loved it because I got to hear her voice. It was my new drug.

“Thanks, Greg.”

The sounds suddenly muted, and I heard the clink of the doors sealing shut. Much better. She moved forward, and I heard another swipe. Then another. And a third time.

“Card not working?” I asked.

“Um…no, it works.”

Hmmm.Interesting. “If I promise not to go completely insane like I did on the hospital floor, can I kiss you? I’ve always wanted to do it in an elevator.”

“Um…”
