“Smells good.”

“I think the cleaning lady was here today. I forget when she comes.” The door shut and a lock engaged. Then a second, and a third.

“Three locks?”

“Um, well, no, only one.”

But three times. That seemed to be her number.

I stood still, not wanting to take a step and face-plant. Yeah, I was really hating this blind thing.

“Okay. All set. Um, couch?”

“Sounds good.” I offered my hand, and her elbow magically slid into it.

Hopefully it wouldn’t be this way much longer. I had to keep believing it wouldn’t. The idea of never seeing again or never seeing her…Nope. That was unacceptable.

“You think the hospital knows we’re gone yet?” I asked.

“If not yet, soon. Drey’s going to get a call, you know,” she said.

“Call and yell, maybe. Do you have his number? I’ll ring him. It’s so late, he won’t come over.”

“You know your brother much?” she snarked.

“Give me your phone. Hey wait. Do I even have a phone?”

She lowered me onto the couch. “I don’t think so. Drey never said much about what you had or where you lived before the, accident.”

“You mean before the beating.”

“Why didn’t you tell Scott anything about it?”

“Better to keep the mouth shut. I’ve learned that the hard way. Walker might be in jail or prison or whatever, but he has a long reach. You should know that, right? I mean, you know Sarah.”

“Yeah. That was unbelievable, what happened.”

“Welcome to my fuc—welcome to my world.”

“Why do you do that?” she asked, and I felt the couch dip beside me.

“What?”

“Stop your swear words, well, some of them.”

I offered my hand, hoping she’d put the phone in it. After a few breaths, she did. Maybe she could read my mind. “You don’t seem like the kind of girl who’s around swearing and cussing much.”

“I don’t huh?”

“Oh yeah.”

“Is that a bad thing?”

“Hell no.” I laughed, and she joined in. “I kind of like innocent.”

“Innocent,” she whispered.

Her voice sounded haunted. Distant. I wish I could see her expression. I clutched the phone in my hand, and a wave of anger and sadness stormed over me. I couldn’t use the phone. Couldn’t see anything to type in numbers.
