“And I want that sucker you have. Watermelon?” He drew in a deep breath.

I reached into the drawer beside the sink to my secret stash. Picking out a watermelon, I asked him, “Was Drey mad?”

“I’m surprised you didn’t hear him yelling.” He jammed a finger in his ear and wiggled as his jaw tensed. “Then again, I bet you were focused on cleaning. So that’s your thing, too?”

I held out the sucker across the table. “Okay,smart-ass, grab the sucker.”

“Hey, watch the mouth. My ears are bleeding,” he teased. “And I said I wantyoursucker. Notasucker.”

The corner of his mouth curved in a wicked-sexy half smile, and my panties melted a little. Feeling brave, I pulled the sucker out of my mouth with a little pop, then leaned over the counter and pressed it to his bottom lip.

He groaned as he sucked it into his mouth. “You arenaughty.”

Not really. I was as far from naughty as anyone could be, but that was pretty fun. Maybe I was feeding off his bravery.

“What’d Drey say?” I unwrapped the extra sucker and popped it into my mouth, then went back to wiping the counter.

“Tore me a new one. Doc had already called him. He laid into me some more, then said he’d be by in the morning to get me.”

“Bring you back?”Crap. Damon was going to be leaving. I knew he would be, it wasn’t like this could be permanent. But it still sucked.

“No. Something about his guesthouse being ready.” He shook his head. “My brother has a guesthouse. I can’t believe it.” He sat on the barstool and propped his elbows on the counter, sucking on the Blow Pop. “These are awesome. I haven’t had one of these in forever.”

I probably had about ten a day. They made me feel like a kid again, brought me back to a time when things were normal. When my parents were alive. When life was less complicated.

I smoothed my shirt down and glanced around the kitchen. All seemed in order. It might be time to hit the hay. Or—

“Want to put on a movie?” Damon asked.

“Um…”

“I know I can’t see it.” He chomped on his sucker. “But I call dibs on the couch withyou.”

“Deal.” Good. I didn’t want to go to sleep. “You find your way to the couch again while I pick out a movie.”

After sifting through my iMovie library, I realized Damon and I had watched a lot of them already. We eventually settled onFast and Furious, both needing some Vin time.

Well, Vin timewithDamon was awesome time.

“Okay. I found the couch without falling on my face. What’s my reward?”

“Want another sucker?” I asked.

“You are so cute; I just want to spank you.” He laughed, opening his arms in my direction. “My prize is you. Get over here.”

Sprawled on the couch, he edged back. Tucking myself in, my back against his chest, I rested my head on his biceps. His warmth encapsulated me like a blanket.

“Relax,” he whispered, his breath sweeping across my forehead. “What brought on your love of action movies?”

“The characters. Kick-ass…that’s what I wanted to be like. I mean, before. When I was a shut-in.”

“How’d you meet Angelina?”

“Online group. Hit it off right away. We were both a mess. Her situation was so much worse than mine. But she was able to kick it. Like Lara Croft kicked anyone’s ass.”

“Who’s your go-to?”

“While Lara’s pretty awesome, I like Vin. Not that I’d dress up like him at Halloween or anything. But he’s all about the positive. You see his fan page? I mean—crap.”
