“It’s permanent, man.” Drey rested a hand on my shoulder.

I shoved him off. “What? Doc?”

“I’m sorry, Damon.”

“No. No. No. You—why keep me here so long after I woke up? And all the testing? You—”

“We needed to get you stable first, Damon. The damage you sustained from the attack was extensive.”

“You did surgery. A few of them. This isn’t happening.”

“We needed time after you woke up to do testing. To see what might shake out.”

“Maybe my sight will, then? It’s too soon to be sure, right? I mean, come on.” I gripped the armrest, wanting to punch something. If I knew my aim would be on, I’d nail Drey. “You knew, Drey. Didn’t you? When?”

“Damon,” Lizzie whispered.

“Don’t. Stay outta this. Drey!” I pushed up to my feet. “When did you know?”

Silence. Silence so thick and heavy it nearly suffocated me.

“We knew early on,” Doc said.

“But—how? I was out. How could you—”

“When they brought you in, Damon, and we saw the injuries, we immediately checked your eyes. You don’t have to be awake for that. Your left optic nerve was severed. No chance to regain that. We knew that the first day you were here. More eye imaging tests showed your right eye’s retina detached. That, in itself, isn’t a huge issue. Recovering eyesight from that is possible. But, your macula was also detached.”

“Stop spouting big words, Doc.”

“We did surgery to fix that. But when your retina detached, your macula also detached, and the surgery didn’t fix that. It’s impossible for us to get that back due to the level of trauma.”

“And you’ve known this the whole time I’ve been awake? Drey, how could you? And Lizzie! You knew, too, didn’t you? How could you?”

“Hey.” Drey bellowed, and from his voice, I could tell he stood up. “Get off her. I asked Lizzie not to tell you. We didn’t want you bolting, Damon. You don’t have the best track record for sticking around when things get tough.”

“Fuck you, Drey.” I pushed the chair back, and it skidded across the floor. “It’s bullshit you lied. Youalllied to me.” I stepped forward. My shin cracked against the corner of the chair.

So many swear words were running through my head I couldn’t grab one. They all lied to me. I wasn’t ever going to see—no. I couldn’t even finish that sentence. That’d make it all too true.

They were wrong. There had to be something someone could do. “Take me to another doctor.”

“Don’t you think I fleweveryexpert I could find in here, Damon? I got someone from Sweden to come evaluate you.”

Heat stormed to my face as I pushed onward, kicking the chair to the side.

Lizzie squealed.

“Enough, Damon.” Drey grasped my arm. That gave me the orientation to jab him in the gut with my elbow.

He grunted, and I stepped forward. The door was here somewhere.

Chapter Twenty

Lizzie

Theclamparoundmychest tightened until I couldn’t take another breath.

The doctor hustled around the side of his desk. “Lizzie—”
