“Just rehab every day. Blind, remember?” I tapped Mr. Magic on the floor, and I heard him shuffle.

“You’re wicked with that thing.”

“Still learning.”

“And what’s your name, pretty lady, since dick mouth isn’t being hospitable.”

“Lizzie.”

“Girlfriend?”

“Friend,” I said, stepping closer to her. “What’s up with you? Still tapping that sweetie of yours? What was her name? Shawna?”

“Hell no. I’m flying solo for now.” He clicked his tongue to the roof of his mouth. A swirl of his cologne rammed into me.

“I can tell, you bathing in Old Spice again?”

“Only when I visit your momma.”

“Motherfucker,” I said, really wanting to put my fist through his skull, but I couldn’t see it.

“What? Dude You—”

“I can’t believe you said that.” Lizzie’s voice was loud. “Dumbass. Let’s go.”

“What? Dude. We rag the mothers all the time. What the—”

“Not when they’re dead.”

“Shit!” A hand curled around my biceps. “What? Your momma’s dead?”

“Get off me.” A dull thud bloomed at the base of my skull. The scents around me, the noises, and now this ass wanker. Everything was ramming into my senses.

“I didn’t know. I swear,” Rain said.

Yeah, right. How could he not know? He was in the gang. Info like that circulated.

“How’d she die? Seriously. What—”

“Heart attack,” I said. “Now shove off, man.”

A stretch of silence inched into what felt like minutes.

“I’m sorry. I—didn’t know. Heart attack, really?”

Sure he didn’t. Jerk was checking up on me for Walker. I knew it. Eyes everywhere.

“Let’s go, Lizzie.”

“See you around, man,” Rain said.

“Whatever.” I gripped Mr. Magic until my knuckles ached. “You okay, LizBelle?”

“Yeah,” she whispered. “What just went down there? You said I was your friend.”

“Trust me. You don’t want him knowing you’re anything more.”

She gasped.
