“Youwerecountingbackthere, weren’t you?” Damon asked me.
I settled into the seat as the driver steered the car out of the parking garage. Hell yeah, I’d been counting. I made it to one hundred, three times during that interaction or whatever it was called with Rain.
“Still counting?” he asked.
I could see the worry on his face. But he’d warned me. Complications. Shit he has to deal with. Okay, maybe his was way worse than mine. Maybe I wasn’t strong enough for him.

I rubbed my hands down my jeans. I reached to the side and straightened the glass in the cup holder. Had to tweak it a little so the label was perpendicular to the handle spot. That was much better.
“LizBelle?”
“Why did you call him Rain?”
“She speaks!” He reached for my leg. “Rain is called that because he can bring the rain.”
“As inbring the rain, like the army term?”
“You know it?”
“Heard it in movies. That means he’s tough.”
“He’s the shit. When he moves in on something, watch out.”
“Oh my gosh. As in. He—in your gang. He—”
“Ex-gang. You know I’m out, right? As in, no more.”
I nodded, then remembered to speak my answers. “I believe you, but how? I mean, is it that easy?”
“No. Hence the shit to work out I mentioned earlier. Before you tackled me.”
“Tackled?!” I laughed sarcastically.
“Gotcha.” He poked at my stomach, but I deflected his shot. “Nice move.”
“I can bring the rain, too,” I teased.
“Oh, I’d like to seethat.”
“So that guy, Rain. He really didn’t know about your mom? I can’t believe he said that.”
“We always used to rag on the moms. It’s a joke. But, no. He had to have known. He was fishing for a reaction. For information.”
“He’s scary.”
“No shit. So, you were counting.”
“Pushy little bugger, aren’t you?”
“I’m getting to know mygirlfriend. What makes you tick. We’ve talked on the phone, but there’s only so much I can remember to ask, you know? So tell me about it. The counting.”
