“Oh my gosh, what did—”

“More coffee?” The waiter’s booming voice came out of nowhere and scared the shit out of me. The adrenaline rush had me flinching, and my hand met something cold.

Shit, my water glass.Ice-cold water splashed right into my lap.

“Oh!” Lizzie squealed.

“Sorry, sir,” the waiter said. “Here. Let me—”

“No groping the boys, man. Back off,” I said, holding up my hand.

A towel fell into my hand, and I started wiping the icy water making my boys shrivel up into marbles.Shit.

Talk about graceful.

“My fault,” the waiter said, his voice cracking, making him sound like he wasn’t any older than twelve, maybe.

“Duh. Kinda blind here. I think I managed this one all by myself.”

Lizzie laughed.

“Oh. You think frozen nuts are funny?” I extracted an ice cube from my zipper and tossed it in her direction.

More chuckling around us had me smiling. If I didn’t laugh I’d punch something.

Being blind sucked ass.

A throbbing pulse bloomed at the base of my neck, and the world seemed to shift on its axis. Like the floor tilted. I grabbed the table, at least that was what I’d intended, but one hand landed in my cheesecake, while the other managed to catch the corner.

“Damon?”

“Something’s wrong,” I said.

And then lightning cracked—in my head.

“Shit.” I gripped my temples.

The streak of pain bolted up the base of my neck, over my skull, and struck my left eye.Son of a bitch. I squeezed my eyes shut to make sure nothing shot out of my eye socket. Another strike. This time behind my right eye. Again. Again.

Holy shit, it was a lightning storm in my brain. “LizBelle.”

Warm hands landed on my shoulders. “Got you. Call 911.”

“No. Not— Just drive me”

“Damon, no. There’s blood in your eyes.”

Chapter Thirty-Three

Lizzie

“Nodrugs.Hesaidno. Only over the counter.” I crossed my arms and stared the nurse down.

It ripped my heart out watching Damon through the small window, squirming in the hospital bed. He was in agony, but he made me swear they wouldn’t give him anything addictive.

“You realize he may be suffering from a cluster headache. The most painful headache out there.”

“Gee, ya think?” I yelled, pointing to the door of Damon’s room. “Get him something.”
