He offered me a lopsided smile, and his grip tightened on my hand. “Like you said, your digital voice wasn’t doing it.”

Hmmm, I wasn’t so sure about that. “I’m crinkling my nose at you, totally not buying it. What’s going on?”

He took in a deep breath. “Has anyone been sniffing around you? I mean, that you maybe didn’t tell me about when we talked?”

I gulped. “What makes you ask? Everything okay?”

“Nice deflection there.” He slowed and cocked his head to the side.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. Getting my bearings. I hear something.”

In the next breath I did, too. Coming up from behind us. I turned to see a Rollerblader barreling down the paved path, headphones plugged into her ears. Damon stepped off the path and I moved to the very edge as she passed.

It was so beautiful here. Green grass, tall, full trees. The sound of distant laughter, and the water slapping against the shore. “You know, I lived on the top floor of a super tall apartment building in New York. Never got to see this kinda stuff unless you hit Central Park, which I didn’t.”

“Being homebound and all. So, even in New York you were living the high life. What’d your folks do?”

“Mom was a judge. Dad, um, astrophysicist.”

“Wow! That’s some serious brain power right there. You do good in school and stuff? Brainiac?”

“I did okay,” I said, thankful he didn’t ask more about Mom and Dad.

“How’d they die?”

Crap, I’d jinxed it, hadn’t I?

“I know it sucks to talk about.” He tugged me onto the path again, and we started strolling. “How ’bout you tell me something, then I’ll tell you something.”

“Really?”

“Yep.”

“Okay.” I let out a breath. “Car crash. They died in a car crash.”

“You in the car?”

“Hey, you said I tell you something then you will.”

“Sorry.” He coughed. “What do you want to know?”

“Do you really not remember how you got injured?”

“Man. Had to go for the kidney shot, huh? Can we start with another question?”

“I’m your girlfriend, right?”

“You are.”

“First, that’s great to know, was thinking you were having second thoughts on that after our first date. And then the distance…”

“Hell no. I mean, aside from the cluster action, that first date was awesome.”

“Okay, then second, as your girlfriend, I get to know things about you. Things not just anyone gets to know.”

“And on most topics, yes, you’re right. But this one, let’s just say there’s a gang gag order.”
