“Gang gag order? Never heard of it. You’re full of crap.”

“Trust me. I wish.”

The path started to curve, and the sound of water trickled into my awareness. The trees loomed, shading the path, so I slowed a little.

“Seriously, Damon. What’s going on? You ask if anyone’s sniffing around, and when I ask about how you were hurt, you bail on the opening-up-to-me part.”

“It’s for the best.”

I huffed.

“Okay. It’s for your safety.”

“Safety. Okay. I’ll buy that.”

“Has someone been sniffing around?” He wiggled our connected hands and gave me a nod as if encouraging me to tell him.

“Scott. That guy I met at the pizza place after your hospital jailbreak.”

“Yeah. You see him?”

“Coffee, a couple weeks ago. And a few days ago, that Rain guy. He didn’t talk to me, but I saw him in the hotel lobby.”

“Shit.”

“What?” My palms went sweaty.

He tugged me to a stop. “There are rules, you know? With my old life.” He glanced around, and it was almost as if he could see.

Now that I thought about it, he hadn’t even stumbled yet. And he was using Mr. Magic like an expert. Was so sure of himself. Confident. Strong.

“Gang gag order,” I said.

“Best way to describe it.”

“So,” I whispered. “You were attacked by a gang.”

“One thing. I’ll tell you this, then don’t ask again. Deal?”

“I’ll try.”

He let out a long breath. “You’re a stinker.”

“That’s why you like me.”

“Don’t forget the mad kissing skills, which I definitely need to catch up on.”

I pushed to my tiptoes and rested my forehead against his. “A kiss for each thing you tell me.”

He released my hand and snaked his arm around my waist. “One of mybrotherstook a crowbar to my head. Thefamilydoubted my loyalty. I paid the price.”

“Damon!” His grip tightened, and his lips pressed against mine. I wanted to revel in the warmth of the contact, of his arm around me, but I couldn’t. He remembered who attacked him.

I’d known it was a crowbar because of hearing Drey, Hunter, and Marshal talking about it, but I honestly thought he didn’t remember everything.

“And that’s the last of it, okay? Your safety is all I care about. Yours and Drey’s. I’m not messing around here. I know I joke and blow things off, but this, hear me on this, LizBelle. This is dangerous shit.”

The tension in his voice sent chills streaking up my arms. “Okay.”
