“And that we lied to you.”

“That, too. Drey shouldn’t have asked you to. First, he shouldn’t have lied to me. But even worse, he shouldn’t have asked you to.”

“I could have stood up to him.”

“He’s hard to stand up to.”

“I’m in, Damon.” She kissed my cheek. “And thank you. Carrying me over the cracks…youcantake care of me. Even if you don’t think you can.”

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Lizzie

“Hotdogsinthepark. Best restaurant ever,” I said. “Reminds me of the ballpark.”

“You a baseball fan?”

“Hell yeah. Yankees—”

“Oh, you didnotjust tell me you’re a Yankee’s fan. I—I don’t think I can see you anymore.”

“You’ve neverseenme before. So there!”

He sagged against the bench and took a bite of his hot dog. After the bridge incident, and how he carried me over, I was sublimely happy. Beside myself with pride.

And that scared the shit out of me. I didn’t want to get my hopes up with Damon, with how things were going. Yet, it was thinking like that that has kept me down for so long.

“What’s changed?” I sipped my soda. “You seem different. More comfortable with your situation.”

“You mean being blind as a fucking bat?”

“Damon!”

“Yeah. I’m getting there. It sucks, though, you know?”

I smiled, and I could tell it was a full-faced smile. I was the queen of denial, been through enough therapy for ten lifetimes. And in my journey, I could look back and see when I started taking a step in the right direction to overcoming my issues.

And Damon had just taken that one step.Admission.

“Should your silence concern me?”

“Just admiring you.”

“Well, there’s that.” He smirked.

“So modest.”

“Hey, the scars make my look now. Well, I’ve not actuallyseenmy look, but I have a great imagination.”

I cupped his face. “I love your look.”

I pressed my lips to his, and he grinned against them. “I love your lips. More please.”

No arguments there.

His hands curled around my back. One resting between my shoulder blades and the other on my lower back. Fighting the urge to crawl on top of him right here on the bench, I eased as close as I could. He tasted like hope.

For the future. Our future.
