One filled with joy. Not illness and blindness. One of adventure and safety. Of love.

His tongue brushed mine, and I caught a hint of salt from his potato chips. “Can I ask a favor, though?”

“It’ll cost you,” he teased.

“Oh yeah?” I went along with it.

“One kiss per request. That seems to be the currency.”

“Deal.” I kissed him.

“Hey, I get to decide the type of kiss.” He cupped my face and tilted my head.

And he kissed me until I was about out of breath.

Tender fingertips danced along my cheek to where our lips connected, then along my forehead, and then through my hair.

Everything around me vanished. Damon’s essence filled every pore, tickled every nerve ending, stroked every part of me until I thought I’d combust.

His fingers glided along my lips, but stalled out there. “Addicted. I told you. So, what was the favor? If it has anything to do with flavored body oil and touching you all over, I’m in.”

Heat steamed my cheeks, and I glanced around, hoping no one heard that. Bad enough we were sucking face out in the open like this, but to hear him talking like that…

“Did your brain short-circuit? Can’t remember the question? I mean, I know I have mad kissing skills—”

“Funny. No. I remember. Jeez. The way you talk—”

“Gets you hot and bothered, doesn’t it.” He wagged his eyebrows.

“Damon. Focus.” I cupped his cheeks. “My favor is…will you, please, if things…ugh, how do I say this?”

“Fast and to the point. Best way. But on second thought, I’m not sure I’m gonna like what you’re gonna say. Maybe we should kiss more, first.”

I patted his chest, keeping him at arm’s length for a second. “I’ve been there since day one with you, Damon. Day one.”

“I know.”

“And twice since you’ve woken up, you’ve pushed me away when things got weird.”

He gulped audibly.

“I get it. Believe me. I’ve done my share of pushing away. But this whole boyfriend-girlfriend thing works better if we’reactuallytogether. As in, face things together.”

“I know. I—”

I pressed my finger to his lips. “Let me finish. And together, the shit we have to face—and there’s more, Damon, lots more when it comes to me—and I know there’s more with you. But what I’m saying is, together, we can face more. We’re stronger. Right?”

“We are.”

“Even if you think I’ll freak or pass out.”

“I’ll carry a brown paper bag in my back pocket.”

I laughed and rested my forehead against his chest. “Hopefully I won’t need one forever. I—I’ll get better. No Iambetter. Small steps, I’ll keep getting better.”

“Webothwill.” He kissed the top of my head and put his arm around my shoulder. Never felt safer.

Until he flinched.
