“Time really does fly when you’re having fun.”

Setting the plates in the sink, he turned to me and laughed. “You and your flying puns, they never get old.”

“Right?” I moved close and twined my arms around his neck.

“Just like my love for you, which is never-ending,” he murmured.

Our daughter’s yell interrupted the butterflies swirling in my belly over his sweet words. “Hurry up, Mommy!”

“Our little tyrant calls,” I teased, brushing my lips against his.

He turned me toward the door and gave me a little swat on my ass. “You’d better go.”

Rubbing my butt, I glanced at him over my shoulder with an exaggerated pout. “Ouch.”

“Don’t worry, baby. I’ll kiss your sweet ass later to make it better.”

The chemistry between us only burned hotter over the years, so I looked forward to that as much as Fernley did her flying lesson.

Hurrying to join our daughter in the front yard, I crouched down to her eye level. “Okay, sweetie. You need to remember a few things when it comes to flying.”

Her bright blue eyes were wide as she practically vibrated with excitement. “Okay, Mommy.”

“The first is that you can never fly alone until Daddy and I say you’re ready.” I waited for her to nod before I warned, “And you need to pay attention whenever you’re in the air. No getting distracted, not even if you see a pretty bird up there.”

She bit her bottom lip. “That’s gonna be hard.”

“It is.” I thought about all the naughty distractions her father had provided me with, and a delicious shiver raced up my spine. “But I’ll be with you while you learn.”

Fernley beamed a smile at me and laced our fingers together. “I know.”

Her unwavering trust filled my heart with joy. “The last rule is super important…remember to always have fun.”

“I can do that,” she agreed with a giggle.

“Good because I think you’re ready.” Straightening, I spread my wings to their full length and instructed, “Let your wings all the way out, sweetie.”

With her legs and arms mimicking my stance, Fernley followed my example. Facing each other with our wings expanded, I gripped her hands. “Now look up at the sky and pick a spot where you want to be.”

She tilted her head back, her eyes squinting. “I see it.”

“All that’s left to do is go.”

As the last syllable left my mouth, my little girl soared into the sky. She took to flying like she did everything else, with great enthusiasm.

Glancing down at Cooper, I saw his sketchpad in his hands and knew we’d have a new drawing to frame soon. One that would remind me that my choice to save him that fateful day had changed our lives in ways we never would have dreamed.
