“Go ahead.”
Moving to the passenger door of my car, I hunted around in the box I’d perched on the seat with some cooking stuff I was taking to Zara’s. “Ah, here it is.” I turned back to Jesse, holding out the tablet.
His eyes went round and his jaw dropped open as he took it from me and he stared at it silently like all his Christmases had come at once.
“Now, it’s not much, and it’s a bit old, but it still works fine. There are some Roblox games already set up that I think you’re the right age for, so you can get playing right away, as long as you don’t overdo it, I guess.”
“Thank you very much.”
“You’re very welcome.” Honestly, I felt ten feet tall, when all I’d done was give him a second-hand tablet.
“You wanna go home and test it out, bud?”
“Yes, please. Thank you for taking me for ice cream.” So formal.
“You’re very welcome.” Bruce ruffled his hair. “We’ll try the peppermint next time, hey?”
“Okay.”
“Bye.” He shot me a shy look from under his shaggy hair, hugging the tablet to his chest.
“Bye, kiddo.” I watched them go, feeling a sudden and inexplicable yearning curl around my heart.
CHAPTER15
Ally
Zara was talking about sex. Again. For someone who’d been so shy and nervous about it before she got together with Matt, she sure couldn’t get enough of it now. Or talking about it. And Emma and Lucy couldn’t get enough of hearing about it, judging by the way they were leaning across the table at the diner, eyes wide, hanging on her every word. Don’t get me wrong, I was happy for her, but all the talk made me feel a weird sort of emptiness that I couldn’t seem to get over. That feeling had been hitting me more and more these days, and popped up in all kinds of different situations.
“So, yeah, I just never thought it could be like that – I’m sorry, Luce, I hope it’s not gross, I know he’s your brother and everything. It just seems like such a miracle to me that I can’t stop blabbing about it.”
“Hey, you just got back from your honeymoon. I’ll cut you some slack today, then I’m putting cotton balls in my ears. And I didn’t know multiple big O’s were a thing until Dante, either. What about you, Em?”
Emma chewed her lip, “Uh, yes, a long time ago. But not since.”
We all knew she was referring to Jake, so we didn’t push for details. I didn’t exactly have all the details, but I did know that Emma and Jake had a history and that it hadn’t ended well. Something about a car accident when they were barely more than teenagers, that, in a weird coincidence, had also involved Lucy’s new husband. Beyond that, all I knew was that Emma had left town not long after and had hardly spent any time in Esperance since. She was only sticking around now because she was nursing her dad.
“Ally?” Lucy turned to me, sucking on the straw of her chocolate milkshake, eyeing me expectantly.
“What? Have I had sex so good I came more than once?”
“Mmm hmm.”
“Um, yeah.”
“Woah!” Zara held her hands up, palms out. “What the fuck? When? Who with?”
“What are you talking about?” Ooooooh, shit. I could play dumb and stall for time all I liked. The ‘sex with Gabe’ cat was about to be let out of the bag.
“When I first told you I was sleeping with Matt, and how good it was, you said no one had ever given you multiple orgasms, and that the guy had to be a giver for that to happen. And since that was literally less than a year ago, it’s gotta be someone recent. Who?”
They all looked at me, and yep, there was that blush again. Seriously, fuck Gabe and his ability to make me blush when he wasn’t even here. Jerk.
A note of breathless wonder in her voice, Lucy whispered, “Gabe.”
“Nooo! Really? Oh my god!!!” Emma’s eyes were wide with astonishment.
“Guys, steady on. It’s not like we orbited the moon or anything. It was just sex.”
