“Well, spit it out. The suspense is killing me.”

“Since we’re officially friends now, how would you feel about adding some benefits?”

Fucking amazing. “I might be interested,” I said with a shrug.

He leaned forward, trailing his fingers up the back of my leg, all the way to the hem of my shorts. “Well then, how about you let me know when you’ve made up your mind?”

Playing me like a fiddle, of course. “How would it work, logistically? With Jesse and everything?”

“Just casual, don’t overthink it. We’ll just do what comes naturally, see each other when we feel like it, or when we can fit each other in. And fuck as much as we can, of course.”

I bit my lip and his eyes, predictably, dropped to my mouth. “It’s a hard offer to pass up.”

“Then don’t.”

“Okay.”

“Great.” He leaned back again, wrapping his fingers around my ankle, holding me there.

“Maybe I’ll go on the pill. Or get an IUD.” I said it quietly, more to myself.

“You don’t have to do that if you don’t want to. I’ll just make sure I’m prepared, so a repeat of last night doesn’t happen.”

“I’ll look into it. If I don’t like it, I won’t do it.” I looked down at my coffee mug, swirling the contents, not looking at him as I said the next words. “It was just that… I kinda liked it last night…not having to worry about it.”

A long pause. “I can tell how much that admission cost you.”

“Fuck off.” Secretly, though, I loved the way he did that. It was sort of like he just didn’t take any of my shit. “Well, on that note, I’m gonna hit the shower.”

He tightened his grip on my ankle. “I’ll join you.”

“I don’t share my shower with anyone.” There was definitely a challenge in my voice and he immediately picked up what I was putting down.

“How about I race you for it.”

“Tell me more.”

“If I make it to the bottom of the stairs before you, we shower together. If not, you’re on your own.”

I eyed my living room, mapping out a line from where I was sitting to the stairs. I had a clear path, but Gabe had the sofa to contend with. “That sounds fair. I’ll count it down.”

“Okay.” He let go of my ankle and I could sense the tension hit him.

“Ready, set—” I was up, shoving the chair aside and bolting to the living room, skirting the sofa, wondering why I hadn’t heard the scrape of Gabe’s chair. What, he didn’t actually want to shower with me? Then I heard it, and my eyes widened. I was about five feet from the bottom of the stairs when he ran at me and with one hand on the back of the sofa, vaulted straight over it, snaking his arm around my waist and throwing me over his shoulder in one fluid motion. I shrieked with laughter, gripping the back of his shirt as he started climbing the stairs. “I’m pretty sure that’s cheating.”

“I don’t think so.”

“You’ll have to pay the BITS tax now, just so you know.”

“Yeah, what’s that?”

“Banging in the Shower. I charge it to anyone who wants to get wet with me.”

Rubbing his hand on my ass and letting out a heavy sigh, he said, “Well, if I must, I must.”

“Oh, you definitely must.”
