“Suit yourself.” I’m not sure any woman had ever talked in such a pissed off way to an impending hot lay.

I dashed into the guest house, threw some clothes into an overnight bag, grabbed my keys and came back out. Gabe was leaning against the side of his truck, looking sinfully gorgeous with his suit jacket unbuttoned and his tie loosened. It was like I’d already messed him up a little. I got into my little black jeep without a word, watching in the rearview mirror as he got in his truck.

A few minutes later, we were at his house. I’d never been there before and I glanced through the windshield in curiosity. The front yard was gorgeous, with neat flower beds and a circular drive. This was to be expected, considering he was a landscape architect, but the house itself was just as impressive. Neat, pretty, well kept. It looked like a family home, not a bachelor pad. Had he always lived here on his own or had he bought the house with a previous girlfriend? Or – fuck – even a wife? That made me realize how little I actually knew about him, but also that I was stalling. Time to get out of the car already, dammit. Maybe Gabe got sick of waiting for me, because he came over and pulled the door open.

“Let’s get this over with.” My legs were shaking as I got out.

“Allegra.” He stopped me from moving past him with a hand on my elbow. The simple touch shot heat straight to my core. I looked up at him through my lashes, only to find him looking at me with concern. Not exactly a good start. “Are you sure? You can change your mind, you know.”

Oh. He waschecking inwith me. I bit my lip. “I’m sure.”

“Because, you know—”

“I’m sure!”

“Okay. Great.”

I followed him up the drive to his front door, my heart racing as he pushed it open and I stepped inside behind him. I barely had time to register the interior – a neat kitchen, a dining area with a small, round four-seater table, a plump, well-worn sofa in front of a big-screen tv in the living room, bookshelves lining the back wall – before Gabe turned, pushing me back against the door as it closed.

He moved closer, resting his forearm on the door above my head, his eyes roving over my face. This was it. He was finally going to kiss me, and I’d never have to wonder again how it would feel, because I’d know. Reaching up, he ran the pad of his thumb along my bottom lip, sending tingles over my skin. My heart was pounding even harder now, so much that I thought it might burst.

CHAPTER4

Ally

“Hurry up and kiss me.”

“I thought you didn’t want any kissing.”

He had me there, dammit. Whatever I said next would let him know how desperate I’d been to feel his lips on mine, how false my bravado was.

A smile tugging at his lips, he let me off the hook, slowly lowering his head, brushing his lips across mine in a featherlight touch that had my insides jumping. Such a small touch, but with so much power behind it.This man could own me forever. Before that thought could freak me out too much, he deepened the kiss, running his tongue along my bottom lip. I opened for him so he could tangle his tongue with mine. God, it was bone-meltingly good. Heat lanced through my system, pooling in my centre, making me desperate for even more.

Pushing my fingers through his hair, I whimpered a little at how good his touch felt, cursing to myself at how pathetic I sounded. I was desperate and needy and pitiful and it was All. Gabe’s. Fault.

Shut up, brain. I’ll deal with that tomorrow. Right now, this was all I cared about. His hands at my hips, sliding up my waist, grazing the sides of my breasts, smiling against my lips when he heard me gasp. Then pushing his fingers into my hair, pulling at the bobby pins, freeing it to fall in a wild cascade of dark curls swirling around my shoulders.

He raised his head, winding a curl around his finger. “Your hair is amazing.”

The way he said it made me feel ridiculously girlishly delighted and I wasn’t sure how to deal with that. “Um, thanks.”

The look in his eyes said he knew exactly what he was doing to me, which of course made me glare at him, which in turn made him smile even more. Fuck. This wasn’t playing out at all like I’d expected. I thought we’d get inside, rip each other’s clothes off, bang like rabbits and I’d leave. Simple. But I was still fully clothed and hadn’t got any more than two steps from the door and Gabe was in full control. I was putty in his hands.

“You know what I want?”

“What?” I whispered. I’d give him anything he asked for right now.

“Turn around.”

I did.

He pushed my hair aside to rain kisses all over my neck, my shoulders, the top of my back. His breath was hot against my skin, and it made me want to feel his lips all over my body. Man, I was so shameless.

When I felt the tips of his fingers across my bare back as he reached for the zipper on my dress, I had to flatten my palms against the door so I wouldn’t fall over. The dress skimmed off easily, puddling around my ankles in an amethyst mess.

“Step out of it.”

Oh. That command in his tone. Tomorrow, I would despise myself for it, but tonight, I loved it. I lifted first one foot, then the other, so he could move the dress out of the way.
