“I wasn’t sure at first,” Jane replied.

“What do you mean by that?” Mr. Frank asked, and she told them how some students had spread rumors about overhearing the teachers talking about her scholarship.

“I wasn’t sure and didn’t want to end up disappointing you guys at the end, so I had to hold it in until it became official,” she said, handing a file over to her father, who opened it to read. But before he could start, her Mum rushed over to see the content of the letter alongside him.

“New York City!” they exclaimed together.

“My baby is going to NYC!” her Mum’s rare dramatic side showcased itself immediately as she squeezed Jane in a hug, almost taking her breath away. And as if that wasn’t enough, her father started his overdramatic actions.

“You’re actually going to study at Crystal Field High School, my Princess!” he exclaimed.

The rest of the months were spent on serious preparation for her transfer to the prestigious high school. The only thing that saddened Mr. and Mrs. Frank was that they wouldn’t see their precious daughter for a while as she would live in a hostel in a city far from them. Waiting patiently for the new session to begin seemed torturous for Jane, but it finally arrived, and she started a new journey without her family.

At first, everything looked strange, but with time, she got used to it. She knew the school was for the rich, but she didn’t expect to see the extravagant way of life of the students there. It seemed the environment she grew up in had a lower class of what was called "rich," because what she experienced in just two days of her stay was enough to tell the difference between her and most of the students there. But that wasn’t going to deter her from achieving her goals.

Saturday and Sunday went by quickly, and on Monday, she had to attend classes. Thankfully, she was given a guide upon her arrival to show her around the school. With that, it wasn’t hard for her to find her class.

Entering the class with her book for the lesson which was about to start, she received weird looks from the students around her. Of course, it was normal to be stared at since it was her first day, but it seemed their stares were out of the ordinary, and she could guess it was because of her dressing. It was then she realized that people’s stares could actually tie a rope around your legs, as she almost tripped over several times before getting to her seat.

“Oh, she’s the new girl you were talking about?” someone whispered.

“Yeah, the one who won a scholarship,” another person replied.

"Most of the time, I wonder what's in the heads of those giving out this scholarship. This school is only meant for people like us!"

"She looks beautiful."

"Duh, what's beauty without riches?"

These discussions and similar ones kept hitting her like a tornado, and she wondered if they were doing it on purpose or if they just didn't know how to gossip in whispers like normal humans would.

Chapter 3:How Dare You!

Just as she was still pondering how to go about the loud discussions about her, with her head lowered and her hair covering her face, loud gasps, whispers, and gushes were heard from different girls, and she felt everywhere turned chaotic. Looking up from her desk, she saw a pretty handsome guy standing close to the entrance of the door, and girls from nowhere fawning over him.

At first, she thought, ‘Why is he still standing there when he’s already inside the class? It’s obvious that you get admirers when you’re very attractive, but that doesn’t stop you from going to your seat, does it?’ Looking at him standing there, watching his admirers with a smirk on his face, she concluded that he was arrogant. When she thought that was all, she saw him point to a particular girl, and when she came out with a blush, he spread his arms wide, and she went in for a hug.

‘Must you put on a show?’ She thought in her head as she rolled her eyes, but her eyes widened instantly with the next action that followed. He locked his lips with hers, and an intense kiss followed immediately. ‘What is wrong with everyone here!?’ She thought in her head as she lay her head on the desk to avoid seeing more of their actions.

“Me too, just a peck will do!” “Over here Jas, I love you too. I’ve had a crush on you for a long time!” “How could you kiss a girl from another grade when your classmates are available for you?” She heard the comments of the jealous girls who apparently wanted to be treated the same way, then suddenly, their shouts heightened, forcing her to look up at once.

The girl who just received a kiss got wads of dollars, making the rest turn aggressive toward her.

“Listen!” He yelled, and everywhere turned quiet right away, and he continued, “If any of you touch the strand of her hair, then that person would have to contend with me, and I’m sure none of you would want that.” He threatened, looking at their faces to instill fear in them.

“Now off to your classes.” He commanded, and they dispersed in a minute.

‘For a guy, he has a lovable voice, a pleasant-looking face, and an attractive body structure.’ She thought and continued with her previous action, but she heard a tap on her desk just after that, jolting her.

“What do you think you’re doing?” The blonde-haired girl by her side asked angrily, but other than that, Jane could picture worry in her eyes.

Scared by the look in her eyes, she asked, “What do you mean?”

Just then, a strong scent of cologne hit her nose, and she saw the girl's twisted face turn adorable as she looked up at whoever was standing in front of them. Joining her to look at the person, she was stunned to see the mischievous handsome guy up close.

“Hey! I haven’t seen your face here before, I guess you are among the students who were given scholarships.” He said as he made himself comfortable on her desk, flashing his white set of teeth, but that only made her uncomfortable.

“Yes, I’m Jane,” she said, hoping not to be asked any questions, as she didn’t want to take the discussion any further.
