“No buts, sweetheart. She might be back any moment from now, and overhearing a discussion like this would only make her doubt her capabilities. We should always be there to encourage her no matter the circumstances.”

Exhaling loudly, he nodded in agreement to his wife’s words, and they changed the subject of their discussion.

“What’s taking her so long?” Mrs. Mildred asked, with a little frown settling on her face.

“It’s not like the normal test or exam one would have in school. I’m sure students from other schools and cities came to participate as well,” her husband said this time.

“I think I need to go out for some air,” Mr. Frank stated, and his wife nodded in reply.

On getting to the door of the sitting room, it was pushed open before he could touch the handle.

“Oh! Dad!” Jane exclaimed, placing her hand on her chest.

“Jane, dear, welcome back,” the not-too-surprised father said with a smile on his face.

“Yeah, thank you, Dad, but were you waiting here to scare me?” She asked, tilting her head to the side as she made a pout.

Giving a manly chuckle, her Dad hung his hand on her shoulder and replied, “Why would I want to scare a beautiful girl like yourself?”

“Too cheesy,” she replied, scrunching up her nose.

“Mum!” Jane called out to the beautiful woman who had been standing, leaning her body on the wall of the dining while watching the conversation of the duo with a radiant smile on her face.

“Jane, honey, how is my daughter doing?” she asked her daughter after the teenager had run into her embrace.

“I’m doing great, Mum,” she replied, also having the same smile on her face.

“So, tell us, how was the test for you?” the ever-inquisitive father came over to ask but received a look of disapproval from his wife.

Shrugging and sighing afterward, he said, “You don’t need to tell us about it now. Rest first before anything else.”

Jane, who was suddenly stopped by her father, looked suspiciously at her mum, then smiled as if she didn’t notice what happened.

“Come on, you both. The test was smooth. Most of the things I studied were out, and I could answer them smoothly, while the others needed a little more thinking, and I figured out the answers to some extent,” she said as she hops to her favorite chair in the dining.

Exchanging a known look, the two adults sat down on their respective chairs while giving her intense attention.

“Guess what?” she asked her parents, her eyes moving from one person to the other with great speed, but before they could answer her, she spoke up.

“We were also given an oral test!” she shouted in joy and laughed hard; it seems she could already guarantee her success.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank had never been happier than they were right now, seeing the pure joy on the face of their only angel.

After that day, weeks turned into months, and four months later, Jane returned from school with a brighter smile than usual. Seeing her energetic demeanor, her parents could already deduce the reason for her happiness but decided to play along and act surprised when the news of the scholarship was revealed to them.

“You’ve been happy all day, my Princess. Don’t you think it’s wise to share your happiness with your father?” her dad asked.

“Not yet. Be patient, I’ll tell you when the time is right,” she replied, sounding serious as if lecturing on ethics.

“Alright then,” her father said, putting his hands up in the air.

“And don’t try to persuade me, Mum. I won’t tell,” Jane said immediately she caught her Mum’s mouth about to move.

“Alright then,” her Mum replied, settling into a familiar smile.

Two days later, she finally broke the news to them. After their initial planned shock and celebration, they questioned her.

“So why did you have to hold it in for so long?” Mrs. Mildred asked.
