The screen switches to the front cover of Ignition Magazine’s new issue—with an older shot of Jackson himself splayed across it. The screen fades to more pictures from the article itself, and my stomach knots.

I know those pictures they’re showing of the inside of his house, and the yard, and the views, and him himself, sitting with a guitar on his couch.

I know them, because Itook them.

“Ignition has also released short audio clips from their apparently exclusive interview with Havoc, which are playable on the online version of their article that dropped this morning.

“Fame is boring. I got bored, so I left.”

I want to throw up. The recoding isJackson—Jackson spilling his guts to me, unaware that I’m being a horrible person and recording him doing it.

I have to find him.

Now.

“And of course, you pair this with the bombshell from her upcoming book that Judy Blue leaked to her Instagram followers this morning, and I think we’re about to have one hell of a news day.”

I turn, and Irun.

I’m only vaguely aware of there beingwaymore people in town than I’ve ever seen before. And more cars, and vans with big TV antennas branching off the top of them. But I dodge that, zigzagging back behind the hardware store and then sprinting behind the crowds towards the dock.

I have to get to Jackson before—

It’s his eyes that get me first. It’s the look of cold, hard betrayal in his steely blue eyes, thirty feet away from me on the dock, that almost bring me to my knees. But I keep running, even as he rips his gaze away and starts to walk down the gangway towards the boat.

“Jackson! Jacksonwait—!”

“You need to stay thefuckaway from me, Melody,” he hisses, yanking his arm from my touch as he storms away from me.

“Please—!”

“You stabbed me in the fucking back!!” He roars, making me choke on the gasp in my throat as he whirls on me with fury.

“I—no!Jackson, I didn’t!”

“That wasmyvoice!” He barks viciously. “Those were pictures ofmeat my fuckinghouse!”

“I didn’t write that story!” Jackson, I’ve been here with—”

“You areexactlywhat I knew you were the second I fucking saw you.”

My heart wrenches, the color falling from my face. I’m dimly aware of people rushing towards the docks behind us, but all I can do is stare him with horror sinking it’s claws into me.

“Please—”

“The fucking enemy,” he says coldly. “That’s what you are, Melody. That’s all you’ve ever really been,”

The tears begin to flood down my face as I shake my head.

“Please! Jackson!”

“Get the fuck away from—”

“Mr. Havoc! Ms. Blue!”

I gasp, shuddering as a hand grabs my arm and yanks me around. Lights blind me, making me flinch away as microphones and cameras are suddenly thrust into my face.

“Mr. Havoc! Does this mean you’ll be returning to the music scene? Do you plan on touring again!?”
