“Mr. Havoc! What made you finally break your silence—”

“Jackson!”

“Mr. Havoc!”

The tsunami of shouting faces and flashing cameras, and space-invading microphones is overwhelming. I blink, trying to catch a single breath as I feel them push me back against Jackson.

“Jackson! Has your daughter known you were here the whole time?”

I blink, and it’s like everything freezes. It’s like a record scratches, and the music turns off.

“My…what?” Jackson rasps darkly behind me.

“Judy Blue just went live on Instagram and leaked it from her upcoming book!”

“Leaked what—”

“Is that why you’re here, Melody?”

I gasp, stuttering back a step as a wave of microphones are shoved into my face.

“Are you and your father reuniting?”

The floor drops out.

A low, whining sound begins to blare in my ear, growing louder and louder, drowning out the rest of the world as everything goes sickeningly still.

“Jackson! When did you find out about Melody?”

My body is icy still and numb as I slowly turn towards him.

“What the fuck are you fucking talking—”

“Is it true?”

The words rip like torn bits of paper from my cottony mouth. I look at him, and it’s like a whole world is burning around me. Like the color and goodness is being scorched away to reveal the dark horror beneath.

“Iswhatfucking true—”

“Did you….”

My face turns white, and my entire heart turns to glass.

“Did you sleep with Judy Blue?”

Jackson blinks. His jaw tightens.

“Why are you asking me—”

“Because my last name isn’t Hendrix,” I choke.

Jackson goes still.

“It’s—”

“Ms. Blue! Ms. Blue! What was it like, writing your first cover piece about—”

Jackson’s face goes pale.
