“Nothing, I’m fine. I threw up everything, so my stomach is fine. I’m just tired now.”

He looked at the door, growing frustrated.

Where was the healer? They should be here quicker. If it were me, there wouldn’t have been any wait.

“Xander, I’m fine,” she growled at him now. “You’re worried over something so simple. This isn’t going to help them view me as powerful.”

He knew she was powerful, but he didn’t care. She was sick, and even the most powerful people needed help when they were sick.

“Don’t argue with me about this. It could be something serious.”

A knock at the door broke their eyes away, and a healer, but not the lead healer, stepped into the room.

“Where is the main doctor?” he asked.

The healer flushed. “She’s not readily available, and you needed someone quickly.”

She was right, and Xander waved her in. After twenty minutes, the healer looked at Xander. “It looks like she just has a nasty case of food poisoning. She should feel better in a couple of hours since she emptied it out of her system.” She handed Xander teabags and explained that she needed to rest.

He made the tea and made sure she drank it. She sipped on it, and he slowly watched as the color came back to her face.

He excused himself for a moment, needing to talk to Maureen. He told Lexi to get comfortable and try to sleep.

He slipped into the hallway and closed the bedroom door behind him. He dialed Maureen’s number. He figured Harper should be here helping Lexi.

The phone rang twice before she answered. “Late call, Xander.”

“Have you seen Harper?” He found no need to keep the conversation going long. He would get straight to the question.

“No, I haven’t seen her around. Would you like me to keep an eye out? I know it takes time for people to adjust to being here.”

He frowned. Her response didn’t make sense. Lexi said that Maureen told her that she’d sent Harper to do training. So, she should know where she was. Maureen was lying to him.

He wanted to dig for details but thought better of it. He had no idea what was going on, but he knew something was brewing, and he didn’t like it.

“No, that’s fine. I’ll just see if she’s around. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

He ended the call and quickly dialed Stephen. He answered on the fifth ring.

“You know it’s like three in the morning, right? I don’t get paid for this.” Stephen spoke half asleep, and Xander knew he’d woken him up. Even half awake, he still had a snarky comment.

He shook his head, worried. “I need you to put a tail on Maureen.”

Xander heard movement, and then Stephen’s voice dropped from his humor to something serious. “Maureen? Our Maureen? What’s going on?”

“Yes, she’s been acting weird ever since Lexi arrived, and I don’t like whatever is going on. I want eyes on her. I’m trusting you with this.”

“All right, I’ll do that. Anything else?”

He shook his head. “Not at the moment. Maybe keep an eye out for Harper. I haven’t seen her, and Lexi is asking about her.” He ended the call and ran his hands through his hair. His nerves were alive, and he was worried. It was like he knew something was going to happen, but he just didn’t know what.

Checking on Lexi, he found her in the bed, fast asleep. He took a deep breath calming himself. He headed out and down the hallway to find Joel in the meeting room. Joel was a family friend and an elder. He was a quiet man but someone that he knew he could trust.

Joel looked up from a book giving Xander a confused expression. “Little early for you to be awake, Alpha. Shouldn’t you be getting your beauty sleep?”

“Joel, I have a problem.” He paced as he shut the door, sealing them together. “I need a little advice on how to navigate a situation. Things seem off.”

“How so?” Joel asked, putting his book down. He clasped his hands together, giving Xander his full attention.
