“Maureen has been behaving oddly, and I’ve caught her lying. And she’s been missing when I need her. And Harper, Lexi’s friend and enforcer, is missing. I don’t know her, but I don’t know if I can trust her. I don’t know if I can trust either of them right now.”

He stopped pacing and looked at Joel.

“I don’t entirely know what’s going on, but something is wrong. I feel it in my gut, and it’s bad.”

Joel watched him for a moment, taking his words in.

He ran his hands through his hair and sighed. His wolf growled. “What do I do? I can’t wait for whatever is going to happen to hit. We already have enough problems on our plate.”

Joel waved a hand. “You do what an alpha does. Keep a close eye on Maureen and Harper. You need hard evidence before you can take someone down. Be careful bringing this up to Lexi. She’s still new and might just think it’s because of all the changes going on with her being here.”

He nodded, taking his words in. The man had a point.

Joel clicked his tongue. “But still talk with Lexi more. She might have noticed some things being off as well. Just don’t make her worry about something if there is nothing to worry about. Just collect all the information before you put the puzzle pieces together.”

Basically, Joel was telling him to be level-headed. He could do that, but when it came to Lexi, it was hard. She was his mate, after all. He wanted to keep her safe at all times.

He thanked Joel and headed back to his bedroom. His body was nervous, and he wanted answers but wasn’t getting them.

Remain relaxed, Xander. Take it calmly and in stride.

As Joel said, he didn’t have any actual evidence about anything. Everything was intuitive. No one would believe him if he didn’t have hard proof.

He found Lexi still fast asleep in their bed. He was relieved the tea worked, and she was sleeping soundly.

He crawled into bed with her, curling her against his chest. He sighed, allowing her scent to wrap around him. His muscles relaxed, and he closed his eyes. He was at peace.

And he slowly slipped back to sleep, dreaming about Lexi the entire time.

THIRTEEN

LEXI

She woke feeling ten times better than she felt the night before. Her stomach wasn’t cramping, and she didn’t feel nauseous. She couldn’t remember the last time she had felt so sick or if she ever had. When she was younger, she’d gotten the flu, but nothing compared to last night. She thought she was dying.

Pulling the pillow closer, she wished she could continue sleeping. She was still tired even though she’d slept. She blamed the hour in the bathroom.

“You feeling any better?” Xander asked in a gentle tone.

She looked up at him, seeing the worried expression on his face. She remembered his shocked expression last night after finding her in the bathroom. His eyes had widened, and his face had paled.

She nodded, giving him a weak smile. “I’m. I’m sorry. I didn’t want to wake you. You were sleeping so peacefully.”

“You should have,” he replied, sitting up. He leaned toward her. “I was worried about you.”

She felt bad. It wasn’t his fault she was sick, and she didn’t want to wake him when he was sleeping. She figured she would be fine.

“I was going to be okay.” However, she was starting to wonder what had made her so sick to begin with.

He frowned, pulling her into his arms. He cradled her, kissing her head. “That isn’t the point. I was worried about you. You should have woken me the second you started feeling sick.”

She leaned into him, allowing his warmth to wrap around her. It would be so easy for her to drift back to sleep.

He sighed heavily. “I searched for Harper, but I haven’t seen her around. Do you happen to know where she is?”

She looked at him, confused. How didn’t he know where Harper was? She turned to him, looking a little befuddled by his question. “What do you mean? Aren’t you the person who sent her out?”

He gave her a perplexed look. “Sent her where? Where would I send her? She just got here.”
