I could feel the beat of her heart. Nothing about our connection told me she was okay. This hadn’t ever been the plan. No, I’d just never had a damn plan. Hindsight and all that. I would never have sent my mate in the pit with the lions. If anything happened to her, I would never forgive myself.

I passed rogue after rogue. None scented similar to the next, and yet they all seemed to be comfortable around each other. Strange how they left each other be. Some even laughed together. Wasn’t this exactly what they all despised about pack? Organization and a place all to themselves as a group? A few glanced at me, and one stopped me.

“You, you’re here for the bidding?”

My fists cracked as I squeezed them tighter.

“No. I just joined the little party. This is quite the set up here.”

He nodded. “It pays better than the fucking neutral zones ever paid.”

That was another mental note.

“Yes, but packs have other means. Why are you rogue?” I asked.

He smirked. “Do I ask you the same?” He eyed me. “I don’t like rules. Unlike you. You probably were the one to enforce them.”

I rolled my shoulders and stood taller.

“I do prefer everyone fall in line but excuse me while I head to my job.”

He rolled his eyes.

“All the same. Whatever. As long as someone pays the fee and we all get a paycheck it doesn’t matter what we used to do. Enjoy the view. We just got a few new ones last night.”

I ran my tongue over my teeth and tried to bite back every single thing that I wanted to say.

“Right,” I said and walked away.

He didn’t follow. The distant crunch of the gravel told me he wasn’t following. Not much worry around this place. Strange, since everything here was illegal. And well hidden. Perhaps that was the reason. I sniffed the air like I’d done outside the walls. There was no doubt they were using magic to hide this place.

This world was far different from that of the council and my own pack. Witches and wolves didn’t exactly mix well. This was getting stranger and stranger.

Colton, there’s magic here for sure. It’s thicker inside.

I took a few more steps closer to my mate’s scent.

We picked up on that too. The triad seems to have found something else.

I didn’t ask. I didn’t have a chance as I slunk around the corner, avoiding the wall of guards.

Fuck. That was a lot of rogues in one space. I took a deep, calming breath. I needed to keep my anger in check, or what good would I be for anyone?

I watched as the males talked and laughed and moved along the outside of a building that smelled like a mix of too much perfume and dirt and water. Definitely the right place. I tried to stay out of the way and walked around the building. There had to be somewhere to see my mate. Some way to get her.

Most of the males stayed closer to the far end, and it made more sense the closer I got. No doors on this side. No windows either. My wolf and I were able to focus in on the sounds coming from behind the walls of cement. This was good for keeping us out and them in. Fuck.

Behind that wall was the sound of water running. Scents of flowers slapped me in the face, but in-between those overpowering scents was my mate’s.

I’m here.

There had to be a way around this. I looked above the wall of testosterone. All of them were too busy laughing and talking more than they were guarding. Still. That was a lot of rogue energy all working together.

I don’t know what you’re going to do. We’re literally locked in a bathhouse. There are two older women making sure we wash.

Running my eyes along the roofline, I followed it up to a second story of what appeared to be somewhat apartment-like, and they all looked down to the roof of the building. A bathhouse. Fine. Call it what you will.

I am going to climb the roof is what I’m doing.
