The trojan horse is outside.

I smirked at Colton’s voice.

Stay hidden. They aren’t letting anyone in yet.

Lucian was still talking.

“Each female goes for thousands. Believe me. Money won’t be a problem if you do your duty. We do auctions every few nights. The word was sent through our chains of communication. The males should be arriving as we speak.”

Chains of communication?

“Are they a pack?”

He nodded.

“Most. We find them females and they let us live here in the new utopia. Win-win. You come and go as you see fit through these territories. Not like up north,” he said.

I took offense. Not that he could tell.

There are wolves out their sending word to packs and whoever the fuck else wants to be part of this shit.

I could feel the movement of the pack members outside these walls like a sixth sense. But it only drove me half insane that I didn’t know what they were doing. My mind kept running back to my mate.

“Are we done now?” I asked.

Lucian nodded. “If you’re done asking questions, sure. But Clint, was it? You cross us and you will have a far worse fate than being in a pack. These females are a necessary evil for some of these smaller packs. Take a second and look around. The council rules have forced the hand of so many packs that they can’t afford to show up at the so-called mating mixers set up with the larger packs.”

I nodded, but his words sat heavy in my soul. What the fuck did that even mean? The council had solved the problems. We had solved the problems. He earned a curt nod from me.

“Where am I headed?”

And then he smirked, erasing any validity that might have been in his words. There was no more wonder at the truth. Perhaps he was right and things weren’t perfect, but he was the problem and he was the reason this place existed. Greed.

“Bathhouse. The females will need to be escorted. You stay on the outside. We don’t want to ruin any of our flowers.”

I scowled but kept my eyes down and fought my wolf’s instinct to stare down this prick. I’d be willing to bet Lucian knew who was stronger in the room, but he was the one with the power in this place. I’d shut up until I had my mate.

“One more question. Why let the new guy get access to the females?”

I was getting dangerously close to punching that fucking smirk off his face.

“You’re a big guy. Security of the product is important. And if you cross me? There are fifty wolves that allow money to drive their moral codes.”

Right. There was no point in staying here. I would regret my actions if I did.

I reached out to my mate, who had been far too quiet.

She didn’t respond to me coming to her, but my wolf sure as shit thought this was a game of cat and mouse. The fucker couldn’t see life and death right now. If I couldn’t get to her, couldn’t touch her soon, someone was going to die, and I was pretty sure his name started with an L, regardless if it started a war.

Mate?

My wolf sat on edge in my soul like a good little pup, just waiting for her to call his name. I, on the other hand, had the pleasure of dealing with her sarcasm.

Coming for me? I’m at a spa. Doing just fine. Don’t worry about me, you ass.

A spa? I sniffed the air and followed the scent of water and I sniffed again. My mate and many other females. Lucian has just handed me my mate. This was going well.

Are you safe?
