I can push him away and run. I’m almost free. Except that’s not really what’s happening.

My wolf’s on board with almost all of my plan, except the one to not obsess about the inevitable.

Devon was out there and alive. But what would happen if I ran?

Would they really kill another alpha? That wouldn’t stand up to the council.

They could fight him and win if he was alone. They’d already missed killing him once, so the answer was apparently yes, they would kill another alpha. The pacing of my stupid wolf in my soul wasn’t helping with the inner calm I desperately needed to keep.

“You are quite beautiful, you know that? What if I just kept you? I doubt you’re worth much used and mated.”

I squirmed and tried to kick him. My head swam, and I missed his head or any vulnerable places, only finding his chest.

I’d wished for my wolf’s strength for so long, and now? Well, she was just as neurotic as I was. Hell. This was going to be a long lifetime.

She snorted, and I felt the entirety of my soul calm. Finally, helpful.

Through her connection, I was starting to feel the beat of my mate’s heart.

Devon? I need help.

There was a snarl, or maybe there were many.

“Drug her. We need to unload.”

The male that was gripping my ankle smirked.

“Later than,” he said.

Like hell he’ll touch you.

I smiled, but that didn’t last long.

“Night, sweetheart.”

Devon’s words were the only comfort in my mind for the next few seconds.

Let them take you. I will kill them if they touch you. But let them take you.

I was breathing. I knew I was breathing, because if I’d stopped, I probably would have been hallucinating this.

You are using me as bait?

There was a stirring in my belly, and it was in response to my mate. But it wasn’t for his cock. Not unless I got off by ripping his shit off.

Yes. No. Well, we’re close to something. I will protect you.

Perhaps I had to spell out the trauma I’d been through.

“I won’t fight. Don’t hurt me,” I finally said.

Except the guy laughed and then a bite of sharp pain pierced my neck as a needle stole away anything else.

It would have been enough to just fall asleep, but then my head hit something hard as they manhandled me.

I was going to have brain damage, I thought, and then I let myself sleep because Devon was there—somewhere—and I didn’t have a choice.
