Days.It had been days. Staking out the fucking bastards who had taken my mate, watching them and planning. My wolf was restless, and I was right there with him.

We wanted to see her, and yet here I was tracking. Why? Why did I put the pack above my own happiness? Because it had been beaten into me. Except this wasn’t just my pack. This was for all wolves. And my happiness wouldn’t save us. But she would save me.

Alpha, we’re close.

Colton’s voice had my wolf perking up and my sense of dread subsiding. He was coming with reinforcements.

The pack connection grew stronger with the passing of miles.

I circled this place again, looking for every weakness and every wolf.

I was at odds with myself. This was the best chance we had to see how this shit worked. See how this business was running and figure out how to stop it.

The truck had disappeared onto a sliding gate that was promptly locked up. Fine, that wasn’t going to be my in any way. There would be no benefit marching in the main gate, and I would be asking for far more casualties than would be acceptable.

I’d fought against instinct over and over as I followed that truck. This place was far more strange than anything I’d expect to find. Something made me want to leave, not get any closer. My wolf refused to listen though. He knew where our mate was.

Inside.

I tried to reach her again and was still greeted by a sleeping wolf. She was alive.ThatI knew.

I was an asshole for allowing this. I’d had so many opportunities to stop and grab her. Instead, here I was, staking out the place, trying to figure out what I needed to do. Letting her be taken inside. Would she forgive me?

This was the second time I’d failed her. My own heart seemed to break all over again. Something I’d assumed I’d long ago healed from. But perhaps what they said was true, that you never truly could heal from losing a mate. Even a mate that had never been claimed.

Pack before self though. That was the mentality as alpha and as a pack member. Several men walked up to the door I hadn’t noticed earlier. They shifted and stood there waiting. It opened and in they strolled.

Wait for me in the forest.

I sent the simple command to my pack members and absently let my wolf march out into the clearing. What the fuck were we doing? Signing our death warrant? Maybe. All I knew was that my mate was in there and I could save her. I could save her and then never allow this to happen again.

I shifted as I walked forward and stood in the spot that I’d watched the others walk in.

“Name?” called a voice through a small sliding door in what I presumed was the door. Looking the brown rectangle up and down, I would bet that touching it would give me tetanus. Through the peephole, I met the glare head on and cleared my throat before I threw out the name of my grandfather.

“Clint.”

The guy sniffed the air.

“You still smell of pack.”

I nodded.

“I just left. I crossed the paths of two wolves not far from here. They told me you welcomed the rogues.”

He sneered.

“Yeah. Sure. Welcome. You afraid to work?”

I shrugged.

“Do I look like I struggle with working?”

The guy chuckled.

“You’re a big guy. You from a large pack?”
