She murmured something and then reached for the basket.
“Mate, taking care of you is my job. Let me take care of you,” I said.

Duties began as the sun rose. The entire place was abuzz with excitement. Tonight would be a mix of celebrations. I needed to introduce Kiara to the pack officially, not at the end of some battle where I’d acquired a new pack. But tonight had another purpose. Although our pack had and would accept her, we needed to merge the Cripple Creek pack. There weren’t many.
I met Colton out on the lawn, letting Kiara get rest. She would need to be involved and part of the pack soon enough, but I was still alpha and I would still take on most of the duties. I just wasn’t sure how she would handle tonight.
It was finally time to get more answers. One being, what had happened with the other females since I’d disappeared into mated bliss?
“I already told you, things are fine. Most can’t be returned home. Most are requesting to stay within our packs.”
I nodded. “Fine. More females. And the brothers?”
Colton and I strolled out to the training grounds.
“You haven’t let yourself go, have you Colt? It’s only been a couple of days since I last trained with you.”
I took in my friend’s tired appearance. Strange how I’d missed it.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
He got into a fighting stance.
“Fine. I’m fine. Did you want to know about the scouting parties or not?”
My hands were in front of my face and ready for his attack.
“Yes. Were they sold? Are they stolen? What happened to their packs?”
He lunged towards me, and I ducked away.
“We don’t have all the answers. It seems like half and half. There have been several slaughtered packs.”
I went for a lower shot and he moved just fast enough. I caught his hip instead of his stomach.
“What is taking so long with the others?”
I lunged, and Colton ducked and got me around the waist.
“Some of those packs we needed to charter flights to and even then, they would be nearly a day if they were still where the girls thought they would be. The other packs are doing the same. Divide and conquer.”
I blocked Colton’s next punch and caught him with my next kick.
“Conquer, that’s exactly what this all seems to be. A fucking one man power trip, but I don’t think the asshole running that place could have done all this. I don’t even see how he could have built up that whole operation. There’s a bigger backer.”
Colton moved quickly, and I had to correct to stay ahead of the next punch.
“You have doubled the required training sessions for all males and unmated females?”
He bounced on the balls of his feet and smirked. “Yes, and you have broken your own rules with that little luna of yours.”
I repaid his sneer by catching him behind the knee.
I could hear the clash of wood from the distance. There were different training fields for wolf training versus those for weapons and the like.
“Kiara will be out training soon. Sarah will work with her.”
